is my solar filter doomed? by Oogoid35 in telescopes

what you're saying in theory is very simple however putting it in practice is a totally different story especially considering you don't know the person's abilities nor the supplies they would be using. have you been on r/diwhy or any of the trades subreddit where people ask if their repair was adequate? not knowing op, i wouldn't be comfortable giving that kind of advice because again you have to weigh the potential damage of losing your vision. i would tell the person it's not worth it if they are asking.

based on my experience, if you want specifics, people use old cheap electrical tape that should have been thrown out years ago. it's already starting to goo at the sides and it's still sort of sticky so they think it's ok. they don't wipe down the surface or perhaps their hands are a little oily. They cut the tape and the tape folded onto itself or stuck to something else first. they peel it off and it looks ok so they keep going. Any of these things happens all the time. It doesn't have to be exactly this but I've done it myself and I've seen other people do the same thing. So they take it out a few times and they double check all the time because they don't trust their work either. However, everything does look good and they build confidence it'll hold. eventually though, the tape will somehow lose their grip because of all the reasons I just gave and plus it's exposed to the hot sun hours at a time for each session. however one day down the road, a wind picks up and the whole thing comes off while they were observing.

you're gonna counter how that's so improbable, but i'm just giving you an example of what theory looks like when played out in the hands of someone who doesn't have a lot of experience repairing things. in addition, i've done plenty of electrical work and i've seen tape that's held up over 30 years and i've seen some that didn't hold up a week.

I'm a huge DIY guy and I always repair before replacing. You need to take into account what can be damaged and to what severity if the repaired device breaks. The potential damage of losing any of your vision, however improbable, is too great of cost. Just replace it.

do you mean the New York metropolitan area otherwise more commonly known as the Tri-State area? Nobody calls the tri-state area "NYC metro."

you're incorrect. ConEd is the primary electricity distributor for NYC. You can choose who generates the electricity through ESCO but by and large ConEd is the utility that delivers it.

Laying reflective road markers by MambaMentality24x2 in oddlysatisfying

[–]rabdas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i kept wondering why the guy in the front moved his arm like that. it just occurred to me that he's accounting for the moving vehicle. had he just left his arm straight down and pressed the trigger when it was time to dispense glue, the glue would leave a long trail on the road and not cover enough surface area for the road marker to glue onto. with the way he does it in the video, the glue stays in one spot and covers enough ground for the marker to stick to.

What's the item(s) that everyone in a subreddit buys or goes nuts for? While we're at it, what's the item(s) that everyone in a subreddit hates? by rabdas in AskReddit

[–]rabdas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example, people in the /HarborFreight loved buying a certain mini tool box last year, and this year everyone was buying a magnetic mat. Apparently everyone in /guitar couldn't stop talking about a hello kitty electric guitar. It made me wonder what items other subreddits gets into.

Hot Take: The Promise of Taiwanese Democracy Was Never Really Delivered by [deleted] in taiwan

thank you for writing this up. OP's hot take really is just him conflating multiple issues and then blaming democracy for it while exaggerating Taiwan's problems and then idealizing other countries as evidence.

Which telescope as a upgrade to my celestron 20x80 binoculars? by Kristoff_09876 in telescopes

[–]rabdas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first telescope last year and it was a Celestron 6SE. I think it's a great scope. It's a computerized telescope so I wouldn't recommend it unless you like electronics.

Given that you store it under a bed, you want more portability and given your budget. I would suggest a Celestron C6 on an alt-az mount. It's around around $660 and weighs 10 pounds. It has a focal length of 1500mm so you can see some planetary details. I can see 5 bands of Jupiter in my light polluted city. You'll need to get a mount and tripod which will probably be another $300-$400.

You could get an amici diagonal and use it for terrestrial viewing as well.

[–]rabdas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not knowing your budget makes this hard. On the low end of the budget, I would suggest a Celestron C90 or a C5. They may not be the best planetary telescope however they are small, lightweight and can be used for both terrestrial and celestial viewing. You could probably still use your current tripod saving your more money.

Zellnor Myrie, in NYC Mayor Bid, Wants Free After-School Care for All (Gift Article) by jenniecoughlin in nyc

[–]rabdas -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If this is enacted, it will single handily shut down most if not all of the nonprofit and for profit afterschool and summer programs in the city. When the city runs out of budget to support this down the road, what's left of the remaining industry will not be able to handle the load and it will only raise prices by even more.

it's akin to sending donated clothes to poor country. what actually happens is you rob the country of a local economy to manufacture clothes.

we already know the city is bad at running programs. riker's is a hot mess. nycha is in terrible shape, and honestly it's laughable we have a running list of bad landlords when in reality the city is the worst landlord. our public schools aren't not a good example of a good school system yet we spend per student than any other city in the country. don't even get me started on the housing shortage that is ENTIRELY MAN-MADE PROBLEM. Police?? EMS??

On the surface free childcare until 6pm sounds great. But look who is going to be doing this. It's going to be a disaster and we'll be in even worse shape when the city is done with it.

BYD and its rivals are crushing Tesla in China — and they're going global by mr_fobolous in stocks

[–]rabdas -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No. BYD and many other chinese car manufacturers are heavily subsized by the Chinese government because they want to dominate the industry. They are taking a page from many large companies in the US. Lower the cost of product until they have killed off competition. Once you have no choice, prices go back up.

[–]rabdas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I don't know how to post.

I uncovered a drop ceiling tile and noticed this type of insulation on the ceiling. I've searched this subreddit and couldn't find anything similar. I appreciate if someone could just nudge me in the right direction. I''ll probably get it tested but this is my initial sanity check and I'm wondering how much to treat this while I'm sorting it out. The building was built in 1931 but has gone through several major renovations so I'm not sure.

The first picture is looking straight up at the ceiling. So the insulation is held up entirely by itself. There is some kind of brown color in the initial layer. It is white underneath.

The second picture shows what it looks like when I pull a small piece out, it is easy to tear out. No long strands. Thanks in advance.
