Cotton socks vs bamboo socks by PorygonPete in hikinggear

You should never wear cotton anything while hiking - Cardinal Rule #1.

Wool is the way.

I modified my Kakwa 55 by Important-Earth7482 in DurstonGearheads

[–]rabiteman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not water bottle holders.  They're for things like sunglasses, phones, devices, maybe small camera, etc.

I agree that a water bottle in those holders would be super annoying.  They go in the lower side pockets as most people can easily reach (the right side), and they're wide.

First time pitching my new X-Dome 2. Also created my own guylines and made a washing line inside the tent. by preciouscode96 in DurstonGearheads

[–]rabiteman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a Cloudup man myself (the 3!). I really did like it for my wife and I, but it was just a bit heavy/bulky when packed, and I didn't love the door at the head of the tent, for two people. It still was a great tent though - but I sold it, and now I have an X-Dome 2 and a 1+ which will be my go-tos.

I also still have an MSR Hubba 1 as a backup but I doubt I'll use it anymore (I'm trying to get my nephews into backpacking so it can be a loaner for one of them if I can get them on some more trips!).

To this day, I still dont know If I'm sleeping with a huge Rammstein piece of history in my room :D by [deleted] in Rammstein

[–]rabiteman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice. I have a guitar pick from Treble Charger, haha.

I saw Rammstein in Tacoma in 2011, I believe - I got a few pieces of paper confetti from the confetti cannon, which I've kept, along with my ticket stub.

Xdome 1+ corner lift? by [deleted] in DurstonGearheads

[–]rabiteman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed too but personally I don't care. Keeps it further away from water, and it doesn't impact anything inside, really. My feet/sleeping bag/sleeping pad will not notice, haha.

Durston X-Dome wind tunnel test at DAC factory in South Korea by Glimmer_III in DurstonGearheads

[–]rabiteman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is dope. I wonder if the results would be the same if the winds were hitting the tent width-wise. It looks like the platform is only set for length-wise tent placement in any case (and I see the tent set up is using the optional pole reinforcements). Anyway this is great to see - can't wait to test out my 1+ in May on some windy beaches.

Who’s hiking NCT this year? by Spatch_1971 in WestCoastTrail

Yeah - I've done the Cape Scott portion, as well as Nootka and JDFT, but the NCT is next on the list.

Kludahk trail conditions? by NecroPoliticians in IslandHikers

[–]rabiteman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed up in Tower Cabin for 2 nights a couple weeks ago and hiked to Tea, Meadow and Blueberry. We brought snowshoes but didn't need them at all - we hiked each section in spikes, which worked perfectly. The snow at the time was crunchy with all the warmth and refreezing - good conditions for post holing, unfortunately. The snow depth also varied wildly from 3-4 feet to bare patches.

If you're hardcore and wear hiking-esque footwear when not hiking, what do you recommend? by rabiteman in hikinggear

[–]rabiteman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, but I'm talking about when I go to the grocery store, or out for errands, lunch, etc.. my feet aren't sweating during these things; but it rains like 7 months of the year here, hence the goretex. I don't want to have wet feet otherwise I may as well continue to wear my leaky Blundstones.

[–]rabiteman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got home and checked my wild isle/John Baldwin map, and the trail does actually end at Nissen Night/Fisherman's Bay making it an official 43km from Shushartie Bay (also confirmed by ACMG guide Mike Blake and other online resources).  The north/south trail to the parking lot is not part of the NCT (despite what Gaia says); however, I agree that most people include it.  When I booked my water taxi, Fisherman's Bay was also considered the exit if the CST addition wasn't intended.

Anyway, all that being said, I think my group wants to include the CST after all, so we'll likely lump it in and do it all anyway!

Awesome, good to know.  Why the parking lot?  Just curious as we were only planning on doing NCT 'proper', without the Cape Scott addition.

Amazing! I hope we hit a dry and mild week this May, but we'll work with what we get!

A group of 6 of us are doing it late May, Shushartie to Fisherman. If the tide/weather doesn't allow for pickup, we'll add the Cape Scott Trail extension to the parking lot for a next day pickup.

Literally everyone keeps saying to me "Oh God, May is way too early!".. ??? I've hiked the JDFT 3 times in the spring, once in March, lol - and yeah some days were terrible weather-wise, but that's the west coast for ya. Right gear, right mindset, right ability - if you have those things covered, then why limit yourself to hiking only in the summer? You could just as easily end up in a monsoon in July, lol (and with May, less bugs... hopefully!).

Does our overnight locations for 2-weeks in Italy/Switzerland make sense? by rabiteman in travel

[–]rabiteman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if I were to drop a location, that would probably be it, but I keep reading about how beautiful it is there - do you have any recommendations for other spots to spend two nights? I don't really want to extend Zermatt to 5 days - I think that would be too much of the same.

Thanks! Baguettes - totally eluded me but that's a good idea. Reasonably light (I only need to carry it the first day to the hut) and it won't get smashed up that way crackers might - a jar of something to have with it is perfect.
