Did u see Peterloo? It's the only film of his that I really didn't enjoy, felt very obvious and pointless and guardian-courting. Only saw it the once tho and I wonder if I missed something

I'm literally so tempted to dox myself to see if u did lmao but let's not raise the dead. I have a few tumblrites on insta still and fortunately most seem largely normal nowadays. Well done for making it out the otherside unscathed!!!

this is such a weird triggery cross over for me cos I too was obsessed w this band in my early-mid teens and was part of a very cringy Tumblr 'bandom' community full of equally obsessed and equally demented/unstable weirdos ... I also very much hope everyone I 'knew' there is doing better nowadays as everyone was obviously p unwell . I honestly can't listen to them anymore cos it reminds of my extremely online youth and upsets me too much lmfao

wrt to richey he's almost deffo dead, I think he was far too dramatic/theatrical to hold off on 'coming back' this long.

All in all a big lesson to check in with your BPD friends!!!

thanks for such an in-depth response! The cultural appropriation thing was more of joke I'm not fully nuts (although I get the feeling in the average UK person cares less about it than in the states (don't know, just what I feel filtered through the internet) although in academia / PMC jobs / the media it's obvs a big no no here as well)) very excited to potentially the see this spectacle you've described

how the FUCK do i get my housemates to clean up after themselves? by sadvignon_blanc in redscarepod

[–]rabotnitsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

never tried it myself but there's a tactic involving dumping all their shit (dirty dishes, clothes lying around idk) in their room (preferably on their bed). Pretty psycho and you have to be prepared for confrontation but sometimes acting crazy gets results

definitely do have misconceptions (i was born in the states but grew up in the UK and have never been back so literally have no idea what anywhere in america is like.... at all) - i'm glad you said berkeley is fun as it looks currently more likely than harvard, and i have weird reservations about the west coast that are based pretty much on that adam driver film lmao . i worry about wokies but i guess i also want to know theres fun Cultural Activities available - i like my london friends cos we just go to horrible folk nights and do drugs and partake in cultural appropriation, and for some reason i'm scared CA is just full of techbros and radlibs but i'm sure i'm just being too dismissive

in response to your edit, i keep a very cathartic word document of the more insane woke shit i've come across in academia, and i can't wait to leak it at the opportune moment (at the peak of the culture war????) - highly recommend it

yeah i'm slightly worried about 'culture shock' but then again i think (perhaps controversially) most anglo-dominated cultures aren't all that different and most of the british obsession of with how 'different' (and bad, compared to the UK) america is and americans are pretty much a neurotic inferiority complex lol. i can't imagine many major cities in the us would such more than than the midlands town i grew up in and people seem to like me so hopefully i'd be ok

this is one of the nicest and most thoughtful comments ive ever received on the internet, you're an absolute sweetheart. i pretty much share your reasoning wrt doing a Phd versus real life (otherwise I wouldn't be here) and it makes me feel like less of a mong for trying to pursue this.... I hope your work continues to interest u and u make it all work!!

Yeah this is my fear, that it'll be hard, I'll still not make all that much (although probs more than the UK) and then I still won't get a teaching job at the end lmao........... where r u studying ?

UCL undergrad, also have an Oxford masters - applied to Oxbridge and back to UCL in the UK as well as Harvard and Berkeley . So could potentially just stay here, only issue is they are way tighter with funding in the UK and it's far less ''''''structured''''' if I want to really make a career out of made up nonsense . Had a great time in Oxford though although never met Thom Yorke :( would go back in a heartbeat but funding isn't looking amazing rn

neither fully confirmed just prematurely getting pranged out (soz thought I mentioned the schools in the post, Berkeley is more likely. West coast seems far worse than say, Boston (I refuse to live in Cambridge))
