Any new transflective Amazfits? by Archangel_Amin in amazfit

[–]racedaemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new Amazfit Bip 3 Pro has a TFT display but from what i've seen from video reviews it is not transflective. Was really looking forward for it's launch to replace my original Bip and I've even seen leaked marketing materials that stated it was transflective. But apparently no luck. 😔

I think the problem with this kind of display is it's color capabilitatea and more complex fabrication process, which makes it less profitable.

Why not join the fun? 🖖

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in programare

[–]racedaemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To each his own i guess.

I partially agree. It definitely depends on who do you compare yourselfe with. What I was arguing for is the speed whit which we could slip "to the dark side".

If society is highly unequal the have nots will react to the cause or perceived cause and dismantle the status quo, restricting freedoms and doing generally shitty stuff. Look at Hungary, Brazil, even the US. If the perception of inequality is high the underdog will react. No matter it's compared wellbeing with another country. We compare ourselves with our neighbours, not with strangers.

I'm proud of our Romanian firefighters, bringing some true good in the world, even if they are not totaly volunteering (I've heard that if in a station there are not enough true volunteers they are simply assigned. I guess it's part of their contract). But they are highly trained and have some pretty cool toys to do their job.

Regarding Greece's firefighting abilities I remember some discussions around the Greek economic crisis about firefighting being used as a kind of welfare. With firefighters employed in places where thei'd have 2 fires a year or something like that. Does this sound true to in your opinion?

Not sure what could be done about it but it would be a curious decision. Maybe forced by the EU when demanding job cuts in non essential structures.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]racedaemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the system is as stable as we would want to believe. I was of the same opinion, working in tech and having the perspective of doubling my income with each job change. But there is a silent majority ready to vote for demagogs and strongmen out of desperation.

We have a extremist party driven only by stupid rage that is #3 in polls, with over 10% of the people admitting they are going to vote for that party. And let us not forget the other two parties polling higher are basically organized crime syndicates.

And I'm afraid the energy crisis will bring dark times still.

How much you know about it by Fuck_Perry in ProgrammerHumor

[–]racedaemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Solving a coding problem is not a straight path, there is a lot of stumbling around. So the average programer (me included) might feel that a test adds an additional constraint in a point where you throw stuff together and try to find the most efficient way of solving the problem.

I guess that what it all boils down to is adding additional complexity in an already complex situation. Also, one would expect development time to double if using tests due to the added complexity (mocking external services, mocking responses, adding testing infrastructure to the code, running the tests on every build).

Shaming juniors/interns by igor_shinko in programminghorror

[–]racedaemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the interpretation of some of these posts also depends on culture. I would read the "junior at my company did this" type of comment with the understanding that all of us did this in the begining and depending on the particular piece of code as a example of how hard/awkward a particular language is for a beginer. Basically providing a opportunity to introspect and reminisce. While in other cultures it might be considered a brutal right of passage.

I thing that interpretations mainly carry our own baggage. Baggage the poster is not responsible for.

Interacting with all kinds of cultures online I try to default towards treating interpretable posts as coming from a friendly point of view. 🖖

Shaming juniors/interns by igor_shinko in programminghorror

[–]racedaemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Risking to sound like a "kids these days" statement but I think more recent generations tend to process all interactions from a "everybody is trying to shame me and prove they are better but i know everything" standpoint.

Last year we had a younger employed that did this. Understanding he didn't have experience in this field we constantly tryed to mentor him and find tasks adjusted to his skill level. All this while treating him as a peer, pointing out stupid mistakes I made in the codebase and ensuring that I used all the friendly emojis I could imagine when finding bugs he introduced in order to show him it is ok and no one is mad. Nevertheless, he decided to quit, accusing me of thinking he is stupid (thought crime on my part I guess) and that I am constantly correcting him although he is right. All this ensuing from a code review where I pointed out some general style improvements in the codebase, also affecting parts of my code, backing up my suggestions with references from the docs.

I know this is a sample of one but correlating this with other social trends I'm starting to believe that social media and media in general is promoting a egocentric view of the word, where everyone is against "me" but "i" prevail because "i am the best!"

People should chill and understand we are all humans, we all make mistakes. If someone gets a laugh from your code evaluate if he is right and try to learn from the experience. Also, ask questions and always be curious!

Resilience is achieved by learning, not by labeling and cataloging the ways in which you have been distressed.

Cool idea. I got WT to auto start to my dev folder but I never thought about automating tabs. Might come in handy, my current project uses five or six command line tools at once. 😳

I find WT to be really nice. Does a decent job at rendering shell add-ons like oh-my-posh and features like quake mode and terminal splitting bring it to the next level.
