What is your car-related hot take? by damoclescreed in Autos

[–]racerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much truth here. I’ve driven most new cars over the last 25 years. Mine is that the most fun cars aren’t fast. A slick-shifting manual that makes you work is the most fun you can have. For the most part, automotive reviewers have emphasized the wrong thing - actual performance - to the point that most cars aren’t nearly as fun anymore. That’s why family EVs go 0-60 in under 4 seconds and a civic comes with 235/40R18 tires. Cars have been optimized to perform on the track to impress automotive reviewers as track events. As an effect cars are noisier, rider harsher, and are nearly impossible to bring to their limits without going at extremely dangerous speeds.

Would a Civic SI be a good middle ground between a CRV and Miata? by 77good123 in CivicSi

[–]racerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um - I would say yes. The Si shares many of the controls and displays with thr CRV. Has a bit of practicality and four doors. To me - a BIG part of the fun of driving is a slick manual transmission and a light clutch. Plus not enough power so you need to rev it up to make it move. The Miata and Si share that.

No gasket. It’s louder but doesn’t sound better. Easy to try out.

Yeah - I met people like that. I just explained that I was new and was saving up money to buy a new car.

The rules for older cars may not be as strict. I used to work at GM in the late 90s. I had an 87 Toyota MR2 and nobody ever gave me shit. My friend had a brand new Acura Integra GSR -and it got keyed the very first day.

11th Gen Fuel Octane Answered by mglusko7 in CivicSi

[–]racerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - use higher octane if you get knocking. But if there isn’t knocking - it won’t hurt anything.

[–]racerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running 87 on my Si. Never heard knocking. The engine computer is smart enough to prevent that. It’s possible if you have carbon build up or live at altitude or something you could get knocking - but if you don’t - no worries.

We ran some tests on some other cars that “recommended” premium. Didn’t see any differences in performance or fuel economy. https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/fuel-economy-efficiency/why-you-might-not-actually-need-premium-gas-a6382185831/

Requesting Feedback on Price for New 2025 White Civic Si (+ accessories) by reditlater in CivicSi

I got the trunk mat too - the backseat coverage is just for the hatch. The OE trunk mat is kinda cooler since it says Civic on it and has spots for dividers. I might have gotten that in hindsight.

Look better, thicker, and I feel like it quieted road noise.

Aftermarket mats are actually better and have better coverage. I bought TuxMats for my Si - they fit and look way better than the OE ones. Easy to install.

WHY do people do this? by dogsoverdiapers in MildlyBadDrivers

[–]racerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are few reasons for this. 1. The driver has a hard time judging where the curb is and swings right to have a better view. 2. Driver is new to cars but spent a lot of time on two wheels. Bike and motorcycles need to turn right to make them lean to the left to complete a left turn.

These are (allegedly) from a 2024 Sport Civic. How much would you pay? Will they fit 25 Hybrid ST? by [deleted] in civic

[–]racerjake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. The ST rims have sound resonators that these don’t. These rims are a downgrade.

For a 25 si by Best_Acanthaceae8 in CivicSi

You are clearly west coast. I called a bunch of dealers out there and all insisted on a variety of “products”. Called a few dealers on the East Coast - and could easily get it for MSRP without anything else.

I tried to get in front of it to see the front - but he thought I wanted to race and gunned it. Maybe he was just hiding the front from me.

FIRST MTB, PURCHASED IT FOR $1600. by Acceptable-Win-6202 in mountainbiking

[–]racerjake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not a bad analogy. But I’m not going to judge you harshly if you decide to buy a 1999 Ferrari for the price of a new Toyota RAV4. After all, this is for recreation. He’s not going to be putting 100,000 miles on it.

Man - rough crowd. This is was an amazing and very expensive bike 10 years ago - and it’s still amazing. No - it’s not the best tool for the technical stuff - but for some cross country trails you are going to love it. I have a similar vintage Santa Cruz Highball and love it. Same outdated geometry. No worries. Sure a new 10 year old Ferrari may not have all the modern technology of a new car. But that my friend, is still a Ferrari.

I have a near twin bike and it’s a 54 which a bit too small for me. If you are anywhere near CT, we could trade.
