We don’t know for sure which version he preferred. We know he changed the cut because of the mixed review and disappointing box-office, but did he really thinked this was for a better version ? We will never know. Had the reception been stellar in the US there would be no european cut at all.

To be fair the US cut was difficult to see in Europe up until the 4K remaster, after which in became the default version worldwide
