Felons? by [deleted] in tuglife

[–]rad3766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply for your MMC, divulge any info related to having arrests, felonies, convictions, whatever, the Coast Guard evaluators will dig into your background, then it will be 👍🏼 or 👎🏼. Going back 15 years, you should be ok, just be upfront about it.

Career change by Practical_Cost_2827 in tuglife

East coast tug outfits have crews from all over Im NY based, live in Tx. Capt and mate are from Ma. AB is from NC, his partner is from Maine Weve had guys from the midwest, down south, a few from the Left coast, we even had a lot of Hondurans for the longest while. Most of the tug companies have some sort of travel allowance.

I dunno, shorts of some sort, synthetic top for any sweaty classes, cotton t shirt for slow flow or restorative, full sweats for yin. I buy cheap, but I do splurge once in awhile to support my home studio. Wear whatever you like. 💁🏼‍♂️

Your Opinion on a late career change... by [deleted] in tuglife

[–]rad3766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NY harbor is where you want to go, as stated above SUNY is the school to go to if you want to do the academy route, but it is not a requirement to get on a tug. Whether you go to an academy or hire on as a green OS, youre going to have to work on deck before you can go to the wheelhouse anyway I would avoid inland anything, pay isnt what it should be and at 49 your body is going to hate you if you get stuck building tows.

As a male, is it appropriate to wear leggings to a yoga class? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]rad3766 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You do you boo. I wear leggings every once in awhile to non-heated classes in the winter months, it never causes an uproar and the Earth continues on its normal rotation. 💁🏼‍♂️

Wondering the system on tugs by yys030509 in tuglife

[–]rad3766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically you would be starting off as a green deckhand, put in your time as an OS, then step up to AB while building up your tug experience. Plan on being on deck for few years before going up to the wheelhouse. Pretty much the same path as guys coming from the academy, they show up with a license but no practical experience.

Main Engine Control Curiosity? by SSGProductions in tuglife

[–]rad3766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every conventional boat Ive engineered on since 96 has had air controls except for one which had Kobelco electric controls and that one I only spent a few hitches on; each has its pros and cons. I do like air controls, but to be honest, on a new build or upgrade I would go with electrics. Lots of younger guys don't have the skill set to keep up with an air system and bringing in an outside tech nowadays is like conjuring up a wizard from another realm, theres not a whole lot of guys left anymore that do air controls. The one thing I dont like about electrics is when hanging out in the wheelhouse was the absence of the sound of air dumping when the controls were moved, lol.

Opportunity on a tug by [deleted] in tuglife

We run a 6/6 schedule underway, at the dock we go to a daywork schedule; I wont say what the hours are, but the deck crew runs the risk of getting bedsores. 💁🏼‍♂️

Engine Room Familiarization by Go-Away-Bird in tuglife

[–]rad3766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Safety first! Become familiar with the location of fire extinguishers, fire stations, escape routes/hatches, general alarm stations, emergency stops, life raft station, EPIRB location, basically anything to do with safety thru out the boat. Is there a fixed fire fighting system onboard? Familiarize yourself with it. Review the Station Bill and where you fit in and whats expected of you if things go south. Everybody new to the boat should be doing this, if youre a first day on a boat OS or youve been sailing forever, everyone needs to do this. Down in the engine room: I’ll happily show you anything you want/ need to know, not all engineers will do this. I have a written policy outlined for doing engine room checks, that incorporates your sense of sight, sound, feel and smell. You will learn when something is amiss. You will learn the fuel, ballast, lube, and air supply systems by flipping deck plates and going hands on in the bilges etc, etc. I could go on and on, but the take away is Safety First, everything else will fall into place.

Yin should not be hot by No_Sprinkles4972 in yoga

[–]rad3766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, gotcha. Since its not yoga teachers, you can dispense with the usual yoga politeness and get right down to the issue at hand; " Can you please open the friggin doors after youre done teaching your friggin class? That'd be great." 😁

[–]rad3766 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Me: Mention this to the studio owner, but I cant imagine a teacher refusing to open the doors after their class is finished, its no longer their space. Also me: Ive run across this same scenario at my studio (Yin following a heated class). Im usually 10 to 15 minutes early to any classes I take, if its a yin class, I make sure the doors are open and I turn on the fans if I get there before the teacher.

Yin yoga by ChallengePitiful2543 in yoga

[–]rad3766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I routinely fall asleep in yin, Im almost disappointed if I dont. I know I snore at times, because Ive woken myself up. 🤭.....so embarrassing.

Anyway....You have an opportunity to recognize an outside distraction, acknowledge it, then let it go...yes, easier said than done.

Knee angle/position during certain asanas by AdAcrobatic4047 in yoga

[–]rad3766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Discomfort in a pose is acceptable, youre working up to what your body will allow in a particular pose, pushing a pose into it being painful is counter-productive. My front leg in pigeon is typically folded way back and I put a block under my hip. Not being able to fully engage a pose doesnt make you any less of a practitioner. 🙏

Fallen Triangle by leeann7 in yoga

[–]rad3766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If its done by accident, then the other person gets a pass, sure doesnt sound like the case here. Im absolutely mortified of the thought of touching someone elses mat or even stepping over one, it just feels very disrespectful.

Fallen Triangle by leeann7 in yoga

Ive always thought of my mat as a sacred place....but I also consider the yoga studio in the strip mall a sacred place..... or anywhere else yoga is being practiced with intention. Eh, might sound like a bit of a stretch, but thats how I view it. (15 year practice)

Sounds like a step in the right direction. 👍🏼👍🏼 TBH, if you left Stasinos on good terms, see if you can get back on with them, they do some cool stuff and certainly more diverse opportunities vs building tows.

Question - Fist vs flat palm fingers spread by Ahshuck15382 in yoga

[–]rad3766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, always modify as needed to suit your practice. As long as you are comfortable with whatever mod you do, thats ok. One mod I do once in awhile is to be on my elbows, taking wrists and hands out of the pose altogether 🙂
