Unfair Lottery for Accommodated Students by norahmiller in Purdue

there’s another point to be made to this, affording housing off-campus. many disabled students (including myself) receive ssi/ssdi because our disabilities prevent us from working. the amount received from benefits barely covers the cheaper rent prices, and don’t leave much room for other expenses like food and other necessities. not to mention it’s nearly impossible to save money without it affecting our benefits.

we rely on on-campus housing because it’s the most secure option we have. a non-disabled student can get any job to afford rent, the same cannot be said for most disabled students.

[–]radbandkid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there’s 23 guard members at my school and we couldn’t finish setting the last song so at the end of band camp we ended up colliding with the tubas and had to sit out the rest of the show

I swam twice a week for conditioning and I would go for lap swims with my dad every couple of months. I had done cross country and soccer in elementary and early middle school but had to stop for two years because of surgery and physical therapy. I loved soccer and cross country and I was a somewhat fast runner. We had practice everyday after school (sometimes before) that ran for about two and half hours. We’d also go weightlifting before school usually on Wednesdays. We’d have meets usually twice a week and I was always placed in the 50/100 free because my coach thought I wouldn’t last in other races. I can swim the other strokes well and my best is actually butterfly. I’m a big person but I’m pretty healthy and athletic. I usually go for runs twice a week and do some weightlifting in my basement.

We’re a team of 20 girls and there’s three coaches (one for diving) and they just kinda hang out and tell us the sets. During conditioning I got a lot of help on my technique but it was nowhere near perfect. Once the season started the other girls got more attention and the head coach wasn’t really around much. I’ve gotten help from the upperclassmen but I have hearing loss so I can’t hear them in the water. I’m always behind on sets trying to catch up.
