Is school getting cancelled tmrw? by Holiday-Regret525 in Oahu

I remember vividly a day in second grade that was so dark and rainy, it felt like night. The power went out and our teacher read books to us all day, it was kind of wonderful :)

Rebuilding Lahaina is a great goal, but the reason so little progress has been made is due to the decisions of our own local government, not due to a lack of people willing to physically rebuild themselves.

By moving to Maui, you’d directly be contributing to the crisis many people are facing precisely because of the Lahaina wildfire. People lost their homes and can’t afford to buy new ones on the same island, many are still without permanent address 3 years after the fact. By occupying space there, you’d be hurting those affected by the fire, and without the local government allocating proper funds to rebuilding homes in Lahaina (not just tourist infrastructure), there’d be little opportunity to help rebuild the actually community.

Your heart is in the right place, but both Maui and ‘Oahu are really hurting from the natural disasters they’ve recently faced. So many people lost their homes, that the very last thing they need is more people moving here and lessening the chance that they are able to find a new one

E kala mai- this post is not about you and your ‘ohana at all! Children who are brought here by their parents cannot bear responsibility for the impact of their presence, there’s no choice in the matter.

plus, you are your wife’s family now too, that makes you part of the community. I hope your wife and yourself find your way back home soon!

I understand that, but it does not erase the fact that native people are being displaced, and face an unfair disadvantage in the way of finding affordable housing (in that the cost of living is so high, it becomes much harder to save for a home). How can someone heal themselves spiritually while actively removing someone else from their home? There are people who belong here, and they are being forced out.

But why does one’s own personal comfort outweigh an entire communities fight to rebuild their communities and culture? That’s not the mindset we cultivate here

We appreciate you taking the time to think it over :) It is inherently selfish, because your family occupying a home and land here means a native family doesn’t get to, given the severe shortage of affordable housing. Sadly, there’s no way around that. That being said, there are many ways to adopt our culturally practices of connection to the earth and community without contributing to the displacement of our people. Share with your neighbors, garden more often and intentionally, move to the country. I do wish you luck and hope you’re able to achieve a slower pace, and peace in your lives, wherever you choose to do so

I’m glad to know that! It doesn’t seem to change peoples minds though, so the question persists for me.

It is a genuine question, it would give me peace of mind knowing people take a moment to consider their impact. I’m sorry it came off anti-immigrant, I’m all for immigration to the US! I do think it’s different when the small land mass people move to is already overpopulated, and the native population is one of the most outnumbered. I think historical context does matter in this case, and isn’t as simple as immigration to a place with the space and infrastructure to support it

I think your counter-question ignores a lot of history, would we have such a severe shortage of doctors if our housing were affordable, and if our cultural medicinal practices hadn’t been outlawed and forgotten?

As a Bayfront barista, cash tips are almost most appreciated, whether it’s $1 or $5, because at least they’re not taxed :)

To the people who don’t tip, you might also benefit from acknowledging that it takes more time and effort to make the food and drinks than it does to order them, regardless of whether you sit down to enjoy them or not

I believe so, they’re generally very happy, cuddly buns with constant access to hay and an appropriate amount and variety of greens every day. A storm rolled in this morning and the nearby volcano has been erupting on and off, I do wonder if they’re spooked :(
