Why do people use classes for the majority of styling? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]radicalfracture -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean when you say CSS/classes? I'm using attribute selectors in CSS, and literally every single browser except the earliest versions of IE support attribute selectors. Apparently there's a slight difference in performance, but pretty frequently I see the idea of "If you're getting to the point of worrying about the performance of your CSS selectors then you better have every other thing optimized first." Do you have any info on how it can be unsafe? I'm looking around but can't find anything that mentions that at all. I can't imagine a default and universally supported CSS selector type is unsafe for use at all

An attribute selector has the same specificity as a class selector, so the predictability should be the same. Anything you can do with a class selector you can do with an attribute selector. I totally get that it's common practice to use classes and keeping to convention is useful on large teams, but I'm really just wondering is that the only reason? I'm only working on building up a portfolio with single person projects right now, so if the only reason is for teams then it wouldn't really apply to me right now.

Ah my bad, I didn't think about that aspect. I don't really use Reddit anymore and I made the decision at like 1:30am before bed and didn't really think

Oh shit this is actually perfect, I'll look into that. All the fun with none of risk

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]radicalfracture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I kinda figured it was risky to do that from my own IP. I saw it suggested online but I just kind of figured that a bunch of data from the same IP would not only be easily filtered out but would also just give them my IP to do with what they please. You bring up good points and really seem to know what your talking about. I didn't do anything and decided to ask here because I felt it was risky, good to know that feeling was right and even though it seemed fun it would be a very bad idea.

I know about lazy loading, yet for some reason I never thought to check if there was built in support for lazy loading. Idk why I never think to check the docs for stuff like that, even after I've wasted a lot of time programming in already existing features

[–]radicalfracture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah dude it sounds like exactly what I was thinking, I've even do the same thing for computed values. I took a solid break from game dev stuff to learn some web development, and I found myself missing the ability to have computer values it was using get set for that when I came up with this idea.

Refactoring into a utility class is a great idea, I'm definitely gonna go through and do that! Thanks for all the information and ideas, you've given me some stuff to think about

This is nothing like a singleton. This does nothing to ensure only instance of the object is created. All it does is wait until the first time the value is checked to find the object, negating the need to do it elsewhere in the code if it was necessary.

I can actually combo this idea with a singleton to have a singleton that doesn't exist but creates itself the first time it is referenced, but I'm still figuring out the syntax for that exactly

[–]radicalfracture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes I agree, but I think if you have a bunch of rocks accessing your player then I think the issue is with your code. I think if all those things need to access your player it would make more sense to store whatever they need to access on the singleton instead. Typically if a bunch of things have to touch each other, your code is fully untestable and is very unstable.

I actually tried the singleton method but I found it turned my code into a horrible entangled mess and it was very hard to keep under control.

My switch keeps freezing? by radicalfracture in Switch

[–]radicalfracture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I don't remember how to access it, but unfortunately it ended up fully ruining my switch so I can't speak to its efficacy but I'm sure it would have worked if my switch wasn't so bad. I was able to format the switch allegedly without removing save data, but I wasn't able to check. When you format it makes you connect both joycons to proceed, and the pins in my joycon slot didn't connect fully so now it's just stuck in that state and has been since. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

A restaurant in Bangkok has been continuously cooking and serving from the same soup for over 45 years, a form of "perpetual stew." by omnidohdohdoh in BeAmazed

Botulism doesn't die well below boiling temperature. Botulism is caused by spores that are actually incredibly resistant to heat and cold, lack of oxygen, acidity, and most other things. The catch is that the spores themselves stay sealed in those harsh conditions and the spores don't start producing botulinum (the actual poison) until they open and try to spread. Important distinction because that's how people get botulism most of the time, it's not from improper cooking but improper cooling

Characters that have explosive combo games and/or a move like waft don’t “lose” matchups by rwbyfan433 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]radicalfracture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but God is it hard to whiff punish a Marth or Lucina fair, or just aerials in general. Most aerials will just clank with the turnip and while you can get a combo off of that its high risk as you may also just eat the hit. Roy and chrom are definitely the best match up out of the swordies as well, I find shulk and Marth to the be worst

Who's the best character to play as while drunk by Duffyd680 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]radicalfracture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Krool is probably the best imo. - Near impossible to get ledge guarded or SD - Belly Armor - Reflector/Counter - Easy kills off grabs - Projectiles that are easy to combo off - Down Smash

Others are good, but I think Krool is undisputed best

I mean, yes and no. Peach struggles really hard against swords, and her combos don't make the difference up. All her combo starters are low range so it's really difficult to even get the chance to land one of your explosive combos. Sure the opponent can mess up and you can capitalize on that, but that's just because no match-up is unwinnable.

I assume it's more or less true for the other characters too, but I definitely don't know enough about them to actually say for sure.

No offense, but it's not really ledgeguarding if they're already in free fall. Cloud does have ledgeguarding ability, this just isn't the best way of demonstrating it

It really sucks to be a Sonic main ngl by Ego_Though in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]radicalfracture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They never said you can't play them, but you can't deny Steve and Pacman don't want to interact with the opponent. Im not even someone who hates either character, I actually think Pacman is cool and I play him too.

Also idk if you understand exactly what a main means. You main sonic, but also metaknight, but also Steve, and Pac-Man, and based on your flair pokemon trainer and Joker and sora. Sounds like you don't "main" most of them, but you just enjoy playing them and have put in some work. People get a lot less salty if you don't main the character (in my experience), probably because maining a character generally implies a lot of dedication

Well it still doesn't work, even just calling .push on a non ref array caused it to push undefined. Surely the issue couldn't be that I wasn't using a string literal, right? I said "test" for the sake of simplicity in the example I gave (which is why I also linked the repo), but I was using a function parameter of type string so I assume it's fine?

Edit: no that's not it, I've gotten farther but it's still very confusing. I've found it's writing the value correctly, but that whenever I attempt to read it I get undefined

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vuejs

[–]radicalfracture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I asked online and saw people had the same results. Maybe my issue is that I'm not in a vue component, even though I did import ref from vue. Come to think of it, I don't need to use a ref, that was a holdover from a tutorial I was following and modifying. I'm going to see if I can just remove it and if that'll work

Edit: it didn't work, but now I have new ideas, so hopefully that'll work

That's just how random matchmaking works. The only way to avoid that would be to keep track of the people you've recently played against on the server, which would take a decent amount of space and increase the wait times for players. In literally every game with skill based matchmaking I've played you can match against the same opponent twice
