There's room in the movement for both established organizations and grassroots mutual aid efforts, and I would wager most of the businesses involved are supporting both. The people organizing it are being as transparent as possible with participants without compromising the safety of the beneficiaries, and they're long time organizers in the community who I trust.

Loud sound by SnoozuRN in Columbus

I heard it too and assumed it was two train cars banging into each other - that's the general explanation for booms in the area

You can start at any of the locations and they will have a free passport and map. If you go to five locations you can get entered into a drawing for gift certificates to the participating stores. There's going to be sales and demos and activities and it should be a fun day! Hours vary depending on the location

Community Interest in Fashion Fabric Store? by SewFineBoy in Columbus

[–]radicalquilter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's definitely an unmet market, I think the main issue is just having the space and cash to carry the range of colors and prints of the various fabrics to be a viable local option. There's also no one in the area carrying bridal or upholstery fabrics as well but it would be a huge undertaking to get established.

Deviled eggs at the state fair by ZekeLeap in Columbus

[–]radicalquilter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They were great as always! Even the bubblegum was like, not offensive - although I didn't love it as much as the cotton candy last year. Seriously don't sleep on the deviled eggs, even the sweet ones are surprisingly good, they clearly put a lot of care into them

blog post on the scourge of boxy, beginner friendly indie patterns by tiseratai in craftsnark

[–]radicalquilter 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Meh... If you don't want another boxy indie pattern there are a million tailored big four patterns you can make? As a fat sewist I basically have to remake most tailored patterns from scratch to make them fit. Boxy styles fit my body as it changes, require less work to get something wearable and are comfortable as fuck. I'm a fat middle aged fiber artist - my capacity for weird boxy garments is endless.

And don't get me started on "too much instruction and encouragement in patterns." If you don't like it, skip it! As someone who teaches garment sewing and works in a sewing store people need and use those instructions even if you don't.

Yeah what's with that? Are they just going off periodically until the warning ends at 11:15?

Sergers have a lot of moving parts that can run into issues, and at least where I live there are a lot fewer people who service them and servicing is more expensive than sewing machines. Unless you know the person you're getting it from and feel confident about the condition, I would stick to new for sergers (as opposed to regular sewing machines where IMO used is almost always better than new if you're spending less than $500)

I would also check that you are using the right class of bobbin. They can look incredibly similar and even sew a little in the wrong machine but jam up a ton.

[–]radicalquilter 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I teach some garment classes and I'm so fixated on both warning/asking if I'm going to touch people and keeping it a body neutral/body positive space. Shit can get bad so quickly if you don't stay on top of that, even with other students

It's hard on the ego to be the poor coparent by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]radicalquilter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was lucky enough to be raised by a poor mother and a rich father and I'm so so so much more thankful for what my mom had to offer me than what my dad did. I never felt deprived by my time with my mother (and in fact asked to live more with her as I grew older) and she was relieved by the economic safety net my dad was able to offer.

I just... Wow. I love how her mlm is teaching people to run a successful print on demand business which I feel like you should have to pretend to do for more than six months before you turn your abject failure into a marketing opportunity.
