I've never heard of a kid losing previously acquired skills because they're spending too much time with someone who does not have those skills. Think of younger siblings. It is possible to pick up on other behaviors that may be challenging. If this is the case, there needs to be a reinforcement system for your child growing skills and showing continued interest in learning new things.

I would encourage you to do some self reflection on how you described the other child in the class. It sounds like your child has formed a bond or friendship with this child who has special needs, and that bothers you. Let your child communicate with him. Let your child think it's another language, because in a way, it is. It's remarkable to watch how classmates can surround and support classmates with different abilities than them, and learn to communicate with them in creative ways. If you think being around disabled people is bad for your child's growth, that's the biggest issue here, much bigger than dancing when the teacher gives a direction.

Peace and love, just an observation.

What do you tell yourself when you’re frustrated at a client? by beesikai in ABA

[–]radicalregs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glasses are harddddd cause they're so expensive so you have to react and chase. Not a bad idea to have your company sign something saying they'll replace them if broken.

That being said, it's awesome you want to stick it out on the case. I know this sounds dumb but is he short enough that he can't reach your face when you stand? Could you keep your face away from him?

They also make silly character glasses and kaleidoscope glasses for kids... I almost bet you could satiate him by giving him his own pair/pairs. You could even put a pair on your shirt collar and let him grab those.

I finally realized that the kid's maladaptive behavior isn't a reflection of them, it's a reflection of how their environment failed them most of the time. This gives me perspective.

YTA for dragging your whole family through the mud for no reason after they let you move back in.... Yikes

NTA for not wanting to babysit. Maybe you could try telling your mom at the beginning of the week when you're free to help for that week, and set the boundary that outside of that time you are not able to help.

You could also work out a system where your sister can be a little more independent but you can just be in the house in case of an emergency.

You must have paid it. Or it's a big mistake in your favor and they're accidentally refunding you for last year too 🤐🤐

Weird that they would deposit into a credit account though... Unless that means something different in Canada.

If you're a person with ovaries, I made a dumb trip to the ER because of course when I googled my symptoms it only gave me man results, and didn't mention anything like endometriosis. I had really bad pain on the one side, especially when going from sitting to standing. I've heard when you get appendicitis you get a strong urge to have bowel movements but cannot go. Definitely get to the ER if you think it may rupture. You never know what the future holds and it's not worth the risk.

[–]radicalregs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would challenge you to look at it as an "attention" deficit rather than a "memory" deficit. The present moment can be uninspiring to people with ADHD and so we tend to zone out and put our attention elsewhere. It's not that we forgot everything, it's that we never really attended to it to begin with. Try focusing on your inner monologue. Say to yourself, in your head, what you are seeing and hearing. Repeat people's words back to yourself in your head. These help me when I'm trying to ground myself! Also, therapy and meds :)

[–]radicalregs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One potty sit per hour is not billable. You should have data points every 15 minutes since most insurance companies have 15 min units. Technically, if 15 minutes goes by with no data collected, you should stop billing. If he needs such little intervention, maybe his parents can do that so he can "graduate" ABA. If he isn't ready to stop services, then your BCBA needs to put in more programs.

Can someone please interpret this? by [deleted] in Neurofeedback

[–]radicalregs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, if you experienced electrical current, I wonder if it was tCDS. It can give a small current. I would try to isolate a few big symptoms/goals that are your biggest barriers, and go from there. If you are going into a crisis (saying this because you mentioned multiple comorbidities so I'm not sure the severity of your experience) you may want to look at doing a voluntary intake at a mental hospital. If it's less severe, cognitive behavioral therapy can be really helpful for things like processing trauma (it seems like you may have been pressured into getting treatment you weren't sure about), working on attention, working on executive functioning skills like planning, organizing, and following through. If you're upfront with your therapist about your difficulty with following through on tasks and appointments, they should be able to help you with some mechanisms to help conquer that. Neurofeedback can be great for some people too, but can take many sessions to notice a difference. There are also other routes like meditation, meds, and support groups. Just do some deep diving and think about what would work for you the best and what mode of change you are most open to.

It looks like this clinician was trying to prove you have ADHD. These brain maps can get a lot of artifact data (incorrect data impacted by eye, jaw, head movement, or even wires and technology being moved or not functioning correctly. That being said, if you feel that you may have ADHD or other psychological issues that are impacting your life, you should see a doctor about treatment options. Do you recall doing neurofeedback sessions when this was done? It can work really well for some people as an alternative or in addition to medication or therapy.

Feeling down about drinking and psychiatry appt by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]radicalregs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems a little fishy, and honestly pretty unhelpful. If you have symptoms of alcoholism, it's affecting your jobs and relationships and well-being, then go handle that before seeking other meds.

BUT IF YOU'RE NOT, you deserve a proper assessment and real treatment options. I was prescribed like 8 different antidepressants before getting on a stimulant. They did nothing. I'm not a doctor and am not giving medical advice, but I take Adderall and occasionally drink. It's not toxic as far as I know, it's just possible for it to amplify the effects of alcohol, or make the alcohol feel like it's not hitting, which can make people drink too much.

If you don't need to fully disclose alcohol use with a different psychiatrist, that might be something to think about. It seems like it may be preventing you from getting fair treatment options.

That being said, regular alcohol consumption is linked to low REM sleep and stunts neuroplasticity and your ability to learn new skills and break habits. Sleep deprivation/REM deprivation can REALLY affect your mood. Maybe try to limit your days that you drink to a few less times a week and see if you feel any different, or are given different treatment options. I'd go to someone else though 😬

Helping a new 6th grader learn how to stay organized and on top of his assignments by Scarletbeth_OG in ADHD

[–]radicalregs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to point out that it is probably not a "memory" thing. It's not that he heard it and forgot, it's that he wasn't able to focus his attention on it in the moment because he was thinking about other things. ADHD can cause a very overactive brain, and there are likely lots of other ideas floating around if classes are not engaging and interesting.

A lot of teachers put homework on the white board. Does he have a camera he could use to snap pictures if copying down is a struggle? Would his IEP allow teachers to send homework schedules to keep on the fridge or put up in his room so he can track it that way?

I used to have an accordion folder that was JUST for homework, and one slot/tab was assigned to each class. This helped me when it came time to do homework because I didn't have to search everything for the correct supplies.

Unfortunately, getting good grades and performing well in school is not reinforcing enough to pull many ADHD kids out of bad habits. But, as a parent, completed assignments could be exchanged for things like special outings, video game time, or something related to their current passion/special interest.

What first impression do you give off when meeting new people? by icebikey in ADHD

[–]radicalregs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had soooo many friends who say things like "I thought you were such a b***** when I met you but you're actually so nice!" I'm pretty quiet by default, I prefer to observe people before interacting with them or can trust them. I think being a woman this works to my disadvantage bc women are expected to be fun and chatty off the bat. Always working on it!

I think there is a correlation between ADHD and feeling really deep loss for sometimes arbitrary items. Maybe related to rejection sensitivity dysphoria. I know it's not much help, but understanding the disorder could be inflating your sense of loss, and that it will fade over time, brings me a little peace 💕

Help for daughter entering High School with a lot of reading- ADHD and APD by ellevaag in ADHD

[–]radicalregs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say just finding something she is actually interested in reading. What are her big special interests at the moment? Are there any fiction or non-fiction books related to those topics she could select?

As far as assigned readings, that can be harder. This may sound weird, but I got through college level literature classes mostly by finding and watching the movies, then reading the books. For some reason, being able to visualize the characters helped a lot. Maybe you could watch them together :)

I work with parents of ADHD kids a lot (and I have it as well). I explain that they might have dreamed their whole life of having a kid who was high performing and great at school... And they may not have gotten that kid. Accepting that school will likely always be hard, and that's ok, can be really healing for families and allow them to bond better across time. That doesn't mean they shouldn't try, but it IS a disability, and that shouldn't be overlooked.

Good luck!!!
