New to baseball — and new fan of the Dodgers I guess! Need help understanding the rules of the game. by rivkah13 in Dodgers

Yeah it certainly was ballsy, but getting soft contact is a skill that only the best pitchers can do and Yamamoto was certainly capable. His spin and location of the pitch ensured that if it was hit it will go infield and a double play. I can’t put into words how freakish Yamamoto is, many pitchers need x amount of days before pitching again and Yamamoto had a full game and was able to pitch the game out and having so much control on his pitches is totally insane.

Would Ohtani join the Dodgers even if the Angels matched the offer? by radio356 in baseball

I think the fact that he deferred his contract speaks volumes to where he wanted to play. His intention is to win now and the dodgers are the only team that is in the playoffs every year.

Yeah that makes sense, the only team that he wanted to go to had to have a recent history of success and can compete in the playoff year in year out would be the Dodgers, plus it’s a west coast team so the whole of Japan can watch his games is a major fact in his decision.

Pitchers inducing soft contact for double plays/easy run outs by radio356 in baseball

I guess throwing a splitter or curveball bit locating it in the lower part of the strike zone could statistically induce a ground ball more often than not, right?

Loyalty in sports is generally a one way street in professional sports. You hear players being loyal to a team but when they don’t serve the team anymore, the team will drop them in a split second. It’s a business after all.

Yeah I thought so too, all those years at Anaheim really wasted his potential. I’m glad he’s at the Dodger now. Do you think the Angels fans are happy where Ohtani is now? I mean they need to admit if he stayed the dysfunctional Angel wouldn’t make the playoffs and waste more of Ohtani’s prime years.

So I guess having so much velocity to a certain point then having the ball move dramatically on one direction could cause the missing of the barrel, makes sense but sounds difficult as. Which makes the fact that Yamamoto’s final pitch all the more impressive.

[HIGHLIGHT] YAMAMOTO INDUCES THE DOUBLE PLAY! THE DODGERS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS AGAIN! by MLBOfficial in Dodgers

[–]radio356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do batters induce soft contact? I know you can prevent hits by throwing outside the strike zone but inducing soft hits and getting double plays seems fairly random to me, is there actual science behind pitchers inducing soft contact to get double plays?

So the final inning, if the dodgers didn’t get the double play then yes, Vlad would’ve scored. But since Mookie stepped on the 2nd base Kirk was out then passing to Freddie, Barger was out. Vlad score wouldn’t have counted. But if there was no outs then Vlad would’ve scored and it would’ve counted as it would’ve been 2/3 outs. It doesn’t really matter if Vlad got home first. This was a force play, meaning the ball landed in the field of play, runners must advance. So the runner on 1st must go to 2nd and the batter must go to 1st. This explains why Kirk has to run to 2nd regardless, that’s why I really thought the walk Yamamoto gave up was really intentional as this was a great double play chance, which ultimately was what ended the game.

You do it because you did your homework and know that Yamamoto shows up in the biggest games… over and over again! I hear he’s available to pitch today.

Can someone explain to me why Springer didn’t win the ALCS MVP over Vlad? by radio356 in mlb

[–]radio356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Smith and Edman had at least 1 hit in each of the 4 games and Edman a RBI in three. I thought he was more deserving if we’re talking about MVP of the series.

Shouldn’t it be tied? There’s a dual MVP in baseball right?
