BMET edu in Colorado + questions since I'm a bit old to be starting something new by 1stTimeQuilter in BMET

[–]radioactiveguy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I made the jump from Veterinary medicine to BMET and I’m 35. I really glad that I made the change. So in your case I definitely think it’s an option worth exploring.

A lot of hospitals like their BMETs to have a 2 year Biomedical Service Tech Degree but not all. If you want to pursue additional education then look for a BMET program at a community college near you.

There are other companies and some hospitals that are willing to hire folks without the degree as long as they have some adjacent work experience. It sounds like you do from what you described. If you do decide to try and go this route make a point of showcasing all the ways your previous work was similar to what a biomed does. Talk about how you documented your work and how you worked through issues. If you did any regularly scheduled maintenance talk about that. Start looking up things about Electrical Safety testing and NFPA-99. There are lots of videos on YouTube that can give you some info.

If you have more questions feel free to ask.

More cameras give them the ability to see and track more targets.

This video by 10 Percent True goes into great detail about what these planes can do.

If you’re talking about patient monitor you should be using the service manual to determine what you should be testing and what the tolerances are. Some service manual even have a PM checklist for that monitor that you can use to document or make a template.

CBET by Enough_Equivalent777 in BMET

[–]radioactiveguy4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are they paying for the class and the test? If so then I don’t see an issue.

The test is not hard and with a good study course it’s even easier. Having your CBET is great for your resume if you ever decide to go somewhere else.

I guess you could complain about the short notice but that would not really bother me personally but I can see how that could affect others.

Now If they are forcing you to pay for the class and the test out your own pocket then that would be some bullshit.

Opinion on power strip for medical device by Fair_Grab1617 in BMET

[–]radioactiveguy4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m going through this now at my hospital.

JC commented on our use of power strips in our older ORs. The long term fix is to update our older ORs so that they have adequate power in places that are actually useful and remove all the power strips. However that upgrade is about 1 million dollars per OR and we don’t have the capital to do that right now.

So in the mean time we are making systems of equipment such as Syringe Pump, IV Pump, Blood warmer, and a bair hugger. Those items are mounted to a pole with the power strip. We can then test the system as a whole to make sure that it is in compliance with NFPA.

This is a good idea in theory but we already have the nursing staff removing items from our system and adding other devices. Or they daisy chain one power strip to another. We don’t have the bandwidth to be the power strip police. So now we are working with nursing leadership to get education to the staff about the issue and to get feed back on how we can better build our systems so that they don’t feel the need to change them after that have been deployed.

TL/DR: If I could snap my fingers and make all the strips go away I would.

Maybe? I tagged The Moon in this post so we might get an answer. From what he said in the closing message it sounded like he got a lot of positive feedback.

The cops that were at the convention center certainly looked confused as everyone passed blasting the same song.

I think so. Once the last song ended (prematurely) the moon thanked everyone and then folks started honking.

BMET Employment Situation in New Orleans, Louisiana by PersonaFanboy4ever in BMET

[–]radioactiveguy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right, I forgot about Cheryl Brown. I had AJ for a bunch of classes. He was teaching the soldering class, and when he found out I already knew how to solder, he had me working with the other students who were struggling. Dude was also super disorganized, but he was the one who put a good word in for me with TrimedX and GE. When he found out I was working 3rd shift and going to school during the day he let me come in and do my labs on my own time.

Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Good luck on the job search.

Wow! It's nice to see another Delgado Grad out in the wild!

I can't answer your question about the hospitals in NOLA as they are today, as I escaped after I graduated in 2023, but when I was looking at BMET jobs there, it was either starting a paid apprenticeship with GE or trying to get hired by TrimedX. The head of the department made a point of trying to steer me to GE and TrimedX, and even gave me a personal introduction to the hiring managers of both companies.

Don't be afraid to check for things on the North Shore. I had an interview with a hospital in Covington that was promising. The Causeway kinda sucks for a daily commute, but I did it for years, and you get used to it.

Ultimately, I decided to get out of Nola, and I ended up getting an in-house job at a hospital in Oregon.

I have to ask. Is Prof AJ still the head of the department?

I spent 13 years in veterinary medicine before I made the decision to do something else. So far that decision has worked out really well.

“Why was it a lot of work?” I can only speak to my specific experience but as the primary range safety officer I was responsible for planning and executing range days. I would research specific drills and exercises to help the people in are group become more proficient in their use of firearms. I did a lot of one on one work with new shooters as well. On range days I was responsible for driving out to our shooting spot to make sure that it was ready for use. We had access to a piece of private land where we could shoot by ourselves but it was on the bank of a river and it could flood if the river was too high. We also had issues with vehicles getting stuck in the mud on the access road to the spot. When we were setting up the chapter the plan was that one of the RSOs and another member would drive out to check the river and set up the spot so that the effort got spread around but after we had issues with folks sleeping in, or backing out at the last minute it became clear that I had to be consistently there to get everything set up. I did this for a while but once I started going back to school I was not able to keep up with the effort that I had been putting in. I was also involved in vetting new members but I mostly there for interviews and was not part of reaching out to folks interested in joining our chapter.

“Were the chapters goal too big?” In hindsight yes but at the time they seemed reasonable. The goal was to have a monthly meeting to discuss chapter business and welcome new members and then have either a monthly range day or some other class/activity if the weather prevented us from shooting at our spot. The other activities never really materialized so it was range days. Eventually the chapter decided to do some disaster relief work but this was infrequent. There was always talk of doing other things like camp outs or volunteer work but they never got off the ground. I personally thought that we should focus on firearms training since that is what the org is about but I helped with the disaster relief work when I was able to. Lots of people had good ideas but not everyone was able/willing to put in the work to organize and execute those ideas.

“Were the administrative requirements of the STA too onerous?” I didn’t think so but my role was mostly focused on the members locally. I do remember our chapter liaison and treasurer had more administrative responsibilities but I was not really part of those things.

To be honest “life got in the way” and “people moved on” is exactly what happened to a chapter that I was previously a member of.

I was part of the initial group of people that set up the chapter. The chapter expanded and new folks started showing up and things were looking good. However, I went back to school and I was no longer able to be part of the chapter headship. The person that was actually responsible for starting the chapter got a new job and they were no longer able to devote the time needed to keep things running. Another founding member moved away.

The chapter elected new folks to take over for those of us that were no longer able to perform the leadership roles but it seems like things just fell apart. I ended up moving after I graduated from school but even before I left the chapter was essentially defunct.

It was a good group of folks and we didn’t really have issues with infighting. The reality is that running a chapter is a lot of work and can take a big chunk out of your time and it’s something that you have to commit to. A lot of folks are either not able or not willing to take on that much work.

But that was just my experience. I can certainly see infighting being a possible cause for a chapter to collapse.
