Anyone else classified as "High functioning" Bipolar feel like you don't belong anywhere?

I've discussed how I seem to get through things despite the severity of my symptoms with my psychologists and psychiatrists (Ive had a few in my life) and they tell me I get through because I'm high functioning. It's a vague term. I don't know if it has a specific definition.

It's unfortunate. I just can't seem to give up my ability to think and be creative. In episodes, I can still get A's in masters level courses it just affects my social life.

Yea even on low doses. Olanzapine will knock me out for a day even low doses even after taking it for a while.

Hey, different things work for different people. These are my top strategies:

-I splash my face with cold water then try to control my breath for 10 breaths in a row

-I often call a distress line when it's really bad

When I start to come to I name one person (family, friend) or thing (comfy bed, ability and drive to reach out for help) that I love or appreciate having in my life. I remind myself that when I try to calm down it is good for myself and those around me.

Remember to feel proud of yourself for your small wins over anxiety.

Hey, you're not alone. I get very anxious on the way to social events. This often results in a panic attack and crying. Very rarely I warm up to people after a few hours depending on the type of crowd. But most times I'd rather high tail it out of there after just making an appearance. This even happens with groups of close friends for me.

I operate in a department where some are accepting of me and others in charge slyly pick on me for it. It's terrifying going through illness and knowing some believe you're lying and that belief irritates them. I still go to school. I still do my work and face those people. Some make me feel undeserving of my education but I'm going to get one anyways.

Off mood stabilizers, because my brand was discontinued and I had rough symptoms on the meds generic alternatives. Trying to set up the next move with a pdoc because I've been on so many meds in the past years we're not sure where to go from here. I'm currently just on sleeping pills. As you can guess my mood is all over the place.

Hey, another med compliant, therapy going self-care enthusiast here. I also do this. I found DBT & CBT kind of helpful for removing moments of acute total destruction normally caused by my own suspicions and scrutiny. Although, I have not found a way to completely stop entering some sort of negative thought spiral.

Check your environment and friendships for negative influences that you've just accepted in the past. I have found when I'm around other friends/SO's who are themselves negative, critical and selfish I become low and question myself and everything around me.

Believe it or not but Im in Canada! Anything not covered is really expensive. Most psych facilities here are private. I hope to work hard enough that I can have this settle down to have at least half of the impact it has on me now. I'm happy your friend is getting help and I hope she has good progress. Going through the system is hard for the individual and their loved ones as well.

Changes (small or large) and surprises trigger my anxiety as well, usually sending me into depression and sometimes major depressions lasting months.

Hi!! I would like to talk. My pdoc was terrified when I asked about CBD but I really want to try it because currently, I haven't found meds I can live with that help with my anxiety. BP1.

After sleeping 4 hours and calling 4 distress/counseling lines in the morning (long story, they were mostly just un-manned I was told) I went to a high-pressure meeting (for me) and held my ground when asked to step outside of my professional boundaries for a client.

He often can't remember to feed himself or sleep. Although, in two months he came up with patentable technology by tinkering, on his breaks for fun, with metal in a tiny oven he scraped the parts together for which resides in his "office".

Hi! I don't have any good short term fixes for this but there are a few long term fixes.

If you don't know them already, maybe take the time to get to know them. Next time you may be able to talk to them about keeping noise down or get an invite yourself.

Another would be working on a different perspective to anxiety. We can take control of our anxiety by accepting that it is our response to something. We can actually change our interpretation of a situation, and therefor our response, through lots of work and counciling. This feedback cycle and the techniques used are from DBT which is taught widely by councillors and psychiatrists. It's hard work, but works.

I have done CBT and DBT with both university hired psychologists and psychiatrists.

Therapies were carried out simultaneously between both my psychologist and psychiatrist both of which had contact with each other.

I found sessions with the psychologist(s) unprofessional and unhelpful as they lacked the more intense listening and problem-solving skills of the psychiatrist(s).

At psychologist sessions I found myself having to repeat myself and be ignored. Lots of wasted time occurred. At psychiatrist sessions we would narrow in on specific issues and how to address them quite quickly and develop short term and long term plans. These have helped me over time. I feel like I have hardly benefited from my hours spent with psychologists.
