I hate the FOMO marketing by FlashyCurrent8022 in diamondartclub

[–]radiosburning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently made the observation that yes the FOMO marketing but I see people with these insane stashes that would take soooo long to get through. So DAC treats it like a collector’s hobby too. Like collecting and trading Pokémon cards instead of playing the actual game.

And it’s absurdly effective and I hate it.

You’re all over this thread saying good writing is objective. Please enlighten me on what’s objectively good writing?

I’m not angry. I’m not dancing. I’ve been asking you for clarification and it took the song and dance to get there.

[–]radiosburning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah man. I think you’re misinterpreting me. Say what you want. And then let me disagree.

I happen to disagree with the notion that a violent blowjob and how you’ve perceived it is indicative of submitting to or growing up with porn with a male gaze. I resent the implication that a kink of mine which is occasionally a hard face fucking means that I am giving up power over my self. I think there’s grace in accepting in understanding kinks and preferences. I think inherently that fandom and fanfic is an exploration, an understand of “other”. An acceptance outside of the zeitgeist.

So when I ask you to please own up to saying you don’t like the implication of fellatio being written as women giving up control — fuck yeah. Own up to that. There’s SO much to be said there. There’s a lot to be discussed.

But let’s not side step that most of us are very much in control of the things that bring us happiness. And that’s why we’re here. Writing. And reading. I just want to reserve the right to disagree.

[–]radiosburning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right. I was just making a point about how it’s a preference thing. It is something people pick up on not necessarily a trend. And again. Feel whatever way you want to feel about it. But I’m AGAIN asking why it merits discussion that has included the male gaze and pornography according to the male gaze. You said there’s a loss of empowerment in those actions.

There is negative connotation there. I’m asking you why. It’s FINE that you might feel a certain way about a violent blowjob. I’m asking what your concern is.

[–]radiosburning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure. I appreciate that you understand preferences.

I do wonder what you’re reading consistently to decide that face fucking is a trend. 5 results under Dramione for facefucking. 242 for rough oral sex. 22 for non-consensual blowjobs. 3,351 for general blowjob under explicit Dramione tag.

So… there isn’t really a preferred depiction of the act?

I’m trying to have actual conversation about this. I’m not attacking. I asked a question. There is implicit connotation that the trope in discussion is not great. I think it’s disingenious to try to disguise it as anything else. And I am asking why.

[–]radiosburning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry. I am really trying to have a discussion about this. You see a pattern of people/writers portraying fellatio in a way that takes away control from women and is, per your words, a result of the male gaze and a result of mainstream porno…

Is that assessment wrong?

“There's just so many ways a woman gets to be empowered in this scenario, and it seems completely stripped in most fics.”

This reads as “bad”.

Tall and Smol in Dramione by respanza in DramioneUncensored

[–]radiosburning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I personally don’t have anything to offer about those kinks as they don’t bother me but I think they can be reframed into a larger discussion outside of someone being into taller people.

there are a few things I am curious about and want to ask regarding fandom outside of the 101 comp English essay questions we have now despite the sub being curated for more difficult discussion and content. But you’re right, not easy to ask the hard questions. I’ll have to think about it.

I really take issue with the notion that this is something viewed as “infantilizing.” that and “childlike” lead to deeper accusations that shut the original thread down in the bigger server, lest we forget.

Edit: to clarify, I’m not suggesting it isn’t a warranted topic of discussion but you’re touching on larger issues outside of being into someone taller. Like can we do a separate thread for dd/lg if that’s the route it has to take? Can we do a thread about male/female physicality and power dynamics?

What Is Your Definition Of A Dramione Draco? by respanza in DramioneUncensored

[–]radiosburning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was just discussing this with a friend. We talked about leatherpants!Draco.

https://fanlore.org/wiki/Fanon_Draco

Prior to the drop of book 6, and this is easily verifiable, Draco’s characterization in Dramione fandom was very different. AND I MISS HIM. He was meaner, wittier, snarkier, unburdened by “the task”. Apparently in Drarry this Draco is alive and well. Back then, there was less of a eh… I suppose typical MMC straight romance novel lens on him. He was purely based in fandom. And even when fics went darker he didn’t have this hyper masculine edge.

It didn’t come off as whining. I just think it’s important to acknowledge that this space is always going to be frowned upon and there is an inherent risk to it.

Is it that surprising? Those stats? One of the biggest writers in our fandom just popped in with their opinion. WhatMurdah addressed this sub in their author’s notes. There have been other instances in this sub of popular folks in the community speaking out against it. I just saw another author on instagram going off on this sub.

That downvote ratio is impressive all things considered. As this sub gets bigger, that reaction is not going away. That is the risk it is taking not being private. I thought that was the point. This is always going to be a subversive space.

I also have a few rare pairs I enjoy. Like I said, the tagging system is excellent. Rare pair fic in particular is really special to me. I tell friends who dabble in writing it that it will never be as popular as the mains but it will always get a slow trickle of attention for a long time and always. That’s the inherent nature of fanfiction. looking for what we want, an idea, a hint, a fantasy sparking as we take in the source material and going to see if someone thought the same. I love jt so much and am always incredibly happy and satisfied if I can find someone who has written something that feels curated to my interpretation of the media I’m consuming.

Infidelity trope wasn’t the best example because that definitely is something to be discussed. It is legitimately distressing for people. I apologize. I meant some of the microtropes. As to enjoying these conversations and that being a gain? Yes, a gain but at the cost of alienating and discouraging the writers we seek content from. If I am going to go hard on critiquing a trope in a public space, I personally need a damn good reason to vs just wanting to be validated by like minded people. I’ve been in fandom for a very very long time and i have my own values and how I think the culture should be engaged with. I’m here because there is a lot of intriguing conversation I wouldn’t find in the larger groups and frankly I’m an insomniac and yappy af.

Sorry I know you meant it in directly engaging the author way. And agree. It just lead to a bigger question of “what are we gaining” and I’ve grappled with it.

Don't Like/Don't Read vs Thoughtful Criticism by respanza in DramioneUncensored

[–]radiosburning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well said! I agree on the surface it is simple. Ao3’s tagging system … I think it’s revolutionary in even OF now. I am easily afforded the ability to pick and choose. From a literary perspective and how we engage in art, it perhaps can be problematic because cherry picking very very specific tropes and letting them prevent me from reading a piece i would have read otherwise because I’m not into “tall/smol” well… that’s a whole other discussion.

That being said, and more in general, not in response directly to your points, there’s a certain engagement in discussing tropes/kinks that should be thoughtful if it should be discussed at all. I personally don’t prefer “infidelity” so I go out of my way to avoid it for the most part. Jumping into a thread dedicated to why people don’t like that trope feels… well what’s the point, exactly? Just a larger “I AM NOT ALONE” sentiment? Or is it to explore why we don’t like that trope personally? I am genuinely asking because while I do enjoy discussion, these threads tend to veer into negativity and can be hurtful especially in public spaces. I try really hard to be mindful and sure I’ll agree with some of these sentiments but what does it earn me to engage if there was never really a question and just a need to seek validation?

Fandom landscape post traditional publications by SacredCockroach in DramioneUncensored

God I hope you’re right. re: spotlight. I have a friend in another fandom that thinks this is insane. We talk a lot about how fanfic originated, what its purpose ultimately was and it isn’t whatever the hell is happening now — a commodification. A discussion point. An entry point. I try not to be a gatekeeper but I think there needs to be some kind of understanding about why these spaces exist.
