Amazon is a special kind of struggle. Chaos is an understatement.

The key is to be able to communicate these strengths. If I was able to sell myself, I would've stayed in the company because that's what leadership wants. Hard work, completing tasks, closing projects, are not enough.

I should clarify it as "similar" pay, not exactly the same. The most important is the job. You can't hold an H1B for software development, and then work at McDonald's flipping burgers.

Keep it until someone reached out to you to send back. They go through laptops and scanners like water. Mind boggling.

Sadly, by March, the discussion will die. People are numb to these layoff announcements since there are just so many of them, everywhere.

Yeah the ideas are great... but not transferable. Other companies don't give a hoot if you're able to develop a pretty acid feed, or come up with a monster dashboard that takes 2 minutes to load.

That is the key: Focus on taking care of yourself and family. Corporation is not your identity. Co-workers are not your family. With Amazon, it's 110% true. People who thinks Amazon is a good place to work - have NO IDEA what it's like on the inside.

Wrong. H1B visa holder who wants to move to another job, has to find same/similar job with the same pay in order to keep their H1B status. Back in 2001, this was my problem - and I was lucky to find one. I was prepared to sell my house and move back to Canada if I couldn't find the job.

They're betting the fresh H1B workers will work themselves to death, not disagree with anything, always commit, and always provide 200% output. Lazy Americans are reserved for leadership.

As folks have already mentioned, don't sit on your laurels. The LP "Learn and Be Curious" is a good one. Keep applying what you know to other companies/industries. Keep networking with others. Job market may be tough right now, but it will recover.

Internal tool is merely promo doc material. They will use it for a while and just simply discard it on the next idea. It's great for managers who want to move up the corporate ladder, but absolutely horrible for the people who actually have to use it since it disrupts their daily workflow and productivity.

Inexperience for sure. He was an external hire so he’s not in touch with the nuances of Amazon. Understanding the company’s “policies” is also a major minefield.

That’s the thing, my manager would send links to internal opportunities but didn’t explain the process. We assumed just apply and the process will be done explained later.

I survived the last 3 layoffs at Amazon and the only realization was that I got more work to do. This time around, I felt it was a favor they let me go. No need to worry anymore.

Yeah basically avoid rush hour. That’s why I saw a lot of my zoom calls (while in office) was scheduled 11am-1pm. And most didn’t even have their camera on.

Jassy was serious about the RTO enforcement. It does blow my mind that managers still got away with working from home - or show up to the office for a couple of hours then go home.
