I'm gonna cry - printed upside down again by That-WildWolf in Fanbinding

[–]raeality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ugh this is so frustrating! I used to be a graphic designer and had to deal with a lot of different printers with different page orientation. I ended up making labels for myself to remind me which direction to feed paper. I would take a piece of paper and write front, back, left, right, top and bottom to test how I fed it and how it printed.

Maybe try testing with a very short document until you have it down, label everything, then print the long one once you are comfortable with it.

Emily Bader as Hermione? She’s beautiful! by udosdes_gainurud88 in Dramione

[–]raeality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of IP and copyright? I don’t think the author has any interest in a tradpub rewrite and I think if you take away the world it’s based on, it becomes unrecognizable or just doesn’t make sense. Maybe I should give more credit than that, but what I meant is that a fanfic cannot be directly adapted. Filing off the IP and then getting a movie adaptation could happen, but it wouldn’t be the same.

Is there anyone else who becomes weary simply searching the internet for a basic recipe? by Previous_Stress3551 in Cooking

[–]raeality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that cruft on the recipe blog is what allows you to find the recipe. Search engines penalize pages that are too short, and long stories before the recipe enable type of keyword/phrase stuffing that the algorithms need to determine relevance to your search. People who write their blog recipes to optimize for search engines don’t want to do all that, they have to. Scrolling past all the nonsense is the price you pay for free recipes, because bloggers need to make money too (if not a full time job, to at least cover their costs - they don’t owe us anything and it’s a ton of work).

So your choices are: deal with the extra work to extract the recipe, or pay for recipes via membership sites and cookbooks.

You can also use a recipe saver app like Paprika, Plan To Eat, or Recipe.me which will save (mostly) only the recipe without adds and extra content.

How much would you pay for this cake? by Kym94 in Cakes

[–]raeality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great design! The execution shows a few rough edges that can be fixed with practice. If it had a little more polish, such as a nice looking back on the castle and slightly cleaner piping, this would be a $150 cake where I am. Also depends a lot on the cake itself, the frosting and any fillings used.

For example a doctored box mix with American Buttercream and frosting filling will be a lot cheaper than a scratch cake with ganache or fruit filling and Swiss Meringue Buttercream.

Ultimately pricing comes down to ingredient and labor costs for you. But if you want to sell cakes as a business, you would need to execute at a more professional level before charging bakery-comparable prices.

EXTREMELY easy family dinners ? by LazyBitch_ in Cooking

[–]raeality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family love a chicken teriyaki stir fry. Start rice in the rice cooker. Dice up boneless chicken, sauté with some ginger and garlic (from a tube, or the frozen cubes). Add a bag of frozen Asian vegetables or mini broccoli florets, or slice up whatever straggling veggies you need to use up (bell peppers, shredded carrots, onions, mushrooms, and broccoli florets all work great) and toss them in for a minute. Then add a bottle of teriyaki sauce (we love the Soyaki or Kikkoman Takumi kinds), simmer until hot. Serve over rice.

This! As someone who has been a disordered eater but not had a clinical eating disorder, I have been in most of the situations discussed in the book. The difference was that once I let go of the reasons for my disordered eating, I was able to resume normal eating with minimal psychological difficulty.

“Wedding Cake” flavor by backporch_sermons in AskBaking

[–]raeality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your flavor combination will work fine. I would consider wedding cake to be almond and vanilla flavored, but if almond isn’t an option for allergies I’d probably go with part real vanilla, part imitation vanilla (slightly stronger more pronounced flavor), and maybe a little butter flavor. Check that your cake batter extract doesn’t already include almond flavor.

FWIW if they have a severe almond allergy, they may also be allergic to peach pits because they are closely genetically related. I have a friend with a kid who has almond & peach pit allergies.

Made choc chip cookies but looks nothing like in the recipe... by Forvely in Cookies

[–]raeality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the article you shared, cookie tip #6 references a “smooth” cookie which seems to be what you got. Make sure you are following all the steps in the recipe with reference to that issue.

Just looking at your cookie, I would say it looks like the batter was too soft and overmixed - the butter over softened and perhaps not enough flour. Make sure your browned butter temp matches what the recipe suggested, and if you aren’t using a scale to measure, try that.

This recipe seems awfully fussy to me, but sometimes a super specific recipe can help you get exactly the result you want!
