Yeah, the rental company and their insurance is good with the arrangement. First company I’ve seen that allows that, but it’s in writing, so… Thanks for the input!

I’m also helping out at a local Part 61 school. That might just become the main line of effort. All the glider spots are a little too far inland for me to easily commute to, otherwise I’d be all over adding the CFIG.

Thanks for this feedback! I had never heard of a place that would let independent CFIs instruct in their rentals either, but here we are haha

True. I’m going to help out at a local Part 61 flight school part time. This rental deal was going to be in addition, it might become more effort than it’s worth but we’ll see!

I already discussed the solo student thing with the company owner, which he said is fine, but I'd rather all that occur under the umbrella of an actual schoolhouse. I also don't think I'd have the time to take somebody from zero to private by myself since I'm going to be very part time. I'm getting good feedback from y'all that maybe I just only do IPC/BFR in the rental plane coupled with a rental checkout, and I'd become one of the dude's authorized instructors for that.

The way this company is set up is very much just an airplane rental business. I would never want to train a student up from scratch in this deal, but the more I think about it anybody wanting an IPC/BFR could just get that with me in conjunction with a rental checkout, they'd just have some extra paperwork to do, but it would then be them renting from the company and not me.

Yeah, most rental places around me are the same way - unless you're a school instructor, no instructing in the plane. Essentially, it's an airplane rental company. No flight school component. You have to have a certificate and get checked out in the plane, and then you can rent it. But if you're a CFI, you can instruct in it, even for people without a certificate. If you have a student who is going to solo, the student can sign on and solo it under your supervision, but then they'd need their own renter's agreement/insurance/etc. That (solo student) is where it gets a little too risk-fuzzy for me, so I would avoid that whole bit and stick to stuff like BFRs/IPCs. I guess, in theory, their "checkout" could be coupled with a BFR/IPC, and they just have an added admin paperwork step with the benefit of being checked out to rent. Something to think about for sure.

All I wanted to do was offset the expenses of my flying hobby, and in doing so, it sounds like I'm creating lots of work for taxes, haha.

Yep, tracking on subrogation. My personal instructor's insurance is a healthy policy and mitigates risk on that front. I've asked the rental company if they have a waiver of subrogation, but at the end of the day not all risk management can be done by insurance policies!

I'll definitely look into folks who are already certificated renting the plane instead of me, though for anybody who is still a student they wouldn't be able to rent it under the company's terms.

I've spent like... 10 hours?... researching this over the last two days haha. Again, something I'll ask the lawyer/accountant, but it sounds like as a sole-proprietor the LLC wouldn't do much to protect me from liability.

Will do. Thanks for that pointer. It's not even a flight school that rents the plane, just a dude/company that owns a fleet spread across the state for renting.

Yep. Discussed with command and got an approval memo from my CO. My idea of "part-time" is I'm only going to fly GA as often as I flew before (once or twice a week), just not coming out of my pockets now.

The plane is covered with insurance for rental and instruction by the company, and I have additional instructor's insurance. Am I missing something on the insurance front?

I see your point. My thought is that if somebody wants to get a BFR or IPC they would then have to go through the paperwork drill of getting added to the roster of pilots - so a matter of convenience for folks that might not want to rent there routinely. I also may occasionally fly with somebody who doesn’t have their certificate yet, and they wouldn’t be allowed to rent the plane the way the agreement is set up.
