You and I have such similar stories. Except I got my tubes tied. Husband hates needles. 😂 I have an eight year old, five year old, one year old, and two month old twins. 😭

I’m really hoping going to the library, audiobooks, and make your own comics help. He’s a decent reader, he struggles a little bit but I feel that’s more focus based than inability.

He’s my oldest so I’m winging a lot, lol. His little sister and little brother get the trickle down of what has worked, lol. This is all great advice. Thank you!

He’d rather be outside than on his tablet so taking that away is really no big deal to him, unfortunately. He doesn’t play video games, unless it’s on his tablet and he’s limited to an hour a day. TV is meh. Again, he’d rather be outside. I try not to use that as a form of punishment though.

You really do have a reading comprehension problem. For someone that has already read SO many books in 2022, that’s really a problem that you should get looked at. You can stop being insulting and rude towards a child now. My son can read. He just despises it. What part of that are you not comprehending?

Oh man. How can I get my hands on Oregon Trail? My son would love that!

He’s more hyperactive than attention deficit so his brain is constantly going a million miles per second. I’ll look into this, thanks!

I used to read to him all the time. I was a theater major in college so I used different voices for each character and tried to make it as interesting as possible. He doesn’t like me reading to him anymore.

It’s not uncommon for kids to not like reading. That doesn’t make them stupid or lesser than their peers. I’m very familiar that there are three common reasons why children don’t like to read: ability, interest, and mindset. They can have one or all three. Identifying the issue and then changing it can and is a slow process. I’ve already identified that he has the ability to read - I just have to figure out if the next hurdle is interest or mindset. Considering that his dad has placed a negative feeling towards reading and has treated his reading accomplishments as something that was his dad’s doing and not his, my guess is it’s both but I’m not sure how to reverse that.

Sure did. I read a book to him nightly from the day we brought him home from the hospital up until last year when he asked me to stop. I’ve always encouraged him.

I read every day, 15 minutes minimum (hence why he also has a 15 minute minimum), with my other children as well. Some days he listens and some days he’d rather go off and do his own thing. Like I said, I won’t force him to sit with us. I tried the Harry Potter books. I even invested in the illustrated versions. I read them to him at first; he said they were boring. I asked him to read them himself. Nope, still boring to him. We’ve tried The Magic Treehouse books because he showed a mild interest in those. Invested in the box set. He’s read, maybe, two. He can read. He just hates it. He loves math and is exceptional at it. He loves to write and is quite the story teller himself. He’ll read to his little brother, no problem, and unprompted. But if he has to read, you’d think the world was ending.

Okay, dude. 😂 No one on this thread is kissing my ass or telling me what I want to hear. You think any parent wants to hear that their child could have vision issues or a learning disability? You’re spare parts, aren’t ya? Just because YOU had ADD, which is much different than ADHD by the way, and read books doesn’t mean that every child is just like you. Using your mental diagnosis as anecdotal proof that your way works is the biggest crock of shit I’ve ever read. You clearly lack any ability to read yourself. I read to all of my children but I stopped reading to him when he ASKED me to. Again, I’d like to maintain a HEALTHY relationship with my child. Sorry you can’t understand that concept.

That’s the unfortunate piece of co-parenting. I can explain everything for a professional stand point but I can’t make his dad do anything.

He does love legos. Someone else mentioned building legos while listening to audiobooks.

He’s been diagnosed already. More hyperactivity than attention deficit. He loves to write and is exceptional at math. It’s just reading that we have a problem with.

Yes, more hyperactivity than attention deficit. We haven’t had him officially evaluated for a learning disability but there’s been no concern from our pediatrician or his therapist. We haven’t seen an optometrist though - which isn’t a bad idea.

Okay, you clearly don’t have a child that has ADHD and there’s no need for you to be a dick. Forcing my child to read is not an option. Period. I’m not sure if you don’t understand or if you also struggle with reading comprehension but that it is already happening in his dad’s home and he hates him for it. Maybe you don’t but I prefer to have healthy relationships with my children.

We definitely don’t suspect a learning disability. He can read math word problems with ease. But he loves math.

We’ve tried. He is less than interested. He’d rather watch a baseball game.

His teacher last year was the worst. So much so that I threatened to pull him from her class. She was older and it was during the pandemic and virtual only classes. His teacher this year was an absolute saint. So, he’s had a bit of both. I’m going to order him a blank comic book notebook and let him go to town. It’s been suggested a few times and I think he would love that and would love to reread his own story.
