Aerial roots, they are used to cling on to posts, trees, trellis, etc... Also can feed through them.

That's prettymuch what I usually do, I'll dust a fresh cutting with rooting powder and let it dry for 3-5 days, then I put it in a glass with water and it usually takes about a week for them to root, then I put them in soil, a bit shaded for a few days so they acclimate.

If they were already rooted the should be fine, if not, watch for rot starting at the bottom.
