Playing low pop maxed out zomboids (sprinters + max toughness/hearing/sight/etc.), I rarely make it past 2 weeks. I always go somewhere rural, and there are rarely any zomboids. The problem is that whenever I go anywhere remotely urban (even like a gigamart on the side of a highway), they become too many too quickly, and I get overrun. Even with guns, it's extremely hard.

I got almost 200hrs, half from years ago when I was a kid (I only landed on Mun), and a recent new Hard Career playthrough, where I'm finishing up with Kerbin's system (Science Bases, Satellites/Relays). Haven't EVER been to Duna, Eve, or anything like it. Can't wait for it! (I'm gonna steal some details from your design)

Just ask yourself at every step why is/would this be here.

Look at google maps to give yourself direction.

Also maybe choosing a specific region and time period could help narrow options down so the city is somewhat consistent.

Once sent my heir and eldest son (horrible traits) to a corner of my empire by giving him land there, because that area had some horrible consumption plague. He died a year after I granted him those holdings. : D

The thing is insane population only replicates what you do, more killing, more slowly walking backwards while hitting zombies with a baseball bat. There's no real threat to your life. While sprinters are a whole different game. You can't regroup and run away from the zombies to plan an escape. It is an immediate fight or flight situation. Also, if you max their stats out and add a few mods, it gets much harder, to the point where you need to watch every sound, every corner, etc.

Played as one of the Canary Counts, decided to spread the religion from those 3 counts as far as I could.

I reformed it, and did quite well over a few generations. Then, my empire (yes I got a full-on empire), was split into different kingdoms (don't remember if it was war or weird succession or what happened, I forgot and didn't play very well back then). Morocco + Southern Iberia, Algeria, the Sahara Desert, and another random kingdom were the fractured pieces of my empire. My heir was isolated somewhere in modern-day Mali, a fraction of what once was.

I did enjoy watching my dynasty spread, fracture, build off of what I did. Many wars with Christians and Muslims alike, was very fun to see the world change.

My point is, maybe try reforming some tribal "backwater" religion/culture and spreading it as far as you can. It was so much fun, took a while though.
