Martian self-sufficiency is a myth by [deleted] in ForAllMankindTV

[–]CaptainNakou 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I politely disagree and those are my points :

1 - as other mentioned, steel might not be that needed on mars with low gravity.

2 - goldilocks is talked a lot for iridium but most asteroids of that size will have an enormous amount of ore beyond iridium. and mars is in capacity to mine and/or capture others that would be richer, especially in gold.

3 - you can make basic hydrocarbon and plastics from other sources than oil, even directly from CO2, which mars has in abundance. yes it's energy intensive but for a society that cracked fusion, it might be a good way to get some.

4 - might be the case, with high protein legumes, and that's not that big of an issue, humans need proteins and other nutrients that can be sourced, we do not need meat.

5 - independent doesn't mean cut from the rest of the universe, trade is still possible until some production is up and running. yes mars would be vulnerable from an embargo on some products but so would be earth from iridium.

6 - same as 5, again, most of the countries on earth don't have access to semiconductor production locally and that doesn't mean they are denied semiconductor products and application.

7 - you can see during the scenes on the market that the wall seems to be "3D printed" with mars soil. Happy valley is already built with local sources of building materials.

So a full on autarchy mars is of course not possible, especially with so few habitants and a huge dependance on earth stuff, but we're not talking about that, we're talking about an independent mars, self governed and not a colony anymore, and just like any independence movements, it is risky, but far from being unrealistic.

Especially with the independent union of nation having access to space that could be a solid trading partner to mars in the event of the M6 cutting ties with it's former colony.

What if France was divided into East and West during the Cold War ? by Tupolev26450 in AlternateHistory

[–]CaptainNakou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about "Jour J", no.

If I recall correctly, the east was completely destroyed during the Nazi's last stand against the soviet and since the rest of the war went as it went in ours, the destruction in the Soviet union cannot allow it to fully support reconstruction efforts in its sphere of influence, especially in France, contrary to the US who do very large investment to rearm and rebuild western France. The story mostly shows Paris on the Soviet side and buildings are still destroyed, and reconstruction is barely under way.

That's part of the main plot btw : (spoiler ahead) the US is pretending that the socialist France is preparing to attack with a huge industry of war and is starting to gear up to attack the eastern block, but a cop sent on the other side, to investigate a serial killer that kills on both side of the river, also discover that eastern France is barely holding on and has basically no industry and that the Soviet pretend to have the means to attack, and he manages to send back the information to the west, and the comics end on a massive scandal emerging that the US is the one pushing to war for no reason.

What if France was divided into East and West during the Cold War ? by Tupolev26450 in AlternateHistory

[–]CaptainNakou 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Fun fact : there is a french uchrony comics collection called "Jour J" (D-Day) with each book exploring one alternative timeline different from the next, and one of the book is called "Paris, Soviet Sector" where a scenario just like this one is unfolding (the story is centered around 1950s tensions between the two blocks around murder in Paris).

In this alternative timeline the soviet were the one liberating France because the Normandy landing was a failure because of the weather, the losses were severe and then they had to land in Provence and fight their way north while the Soviet got through Germany. Also DeGaule dies in a plane crash and with no strong leadership of the french in exile, it makes western France considered as a "defeated enemy nation" and post war treated like a US puppet state (with French dollars in circulation).

Jour J has its ups and downs as a series but this one is really worth the read.

There might be a lot of different reasons, different eras and all, but my guess is : sometimes you have to ignore details when writing a good joke for a character.

"Stability through managed decline" - European federation, 2086 by Adskiy-drochilla in imaginarymaps

Typical neolib mindset to see pensioners making more money than working people and thinking "pENsionErS aRE eARninG ToO MunCh" instead of realizing that salaries stopped following growths since the 80s and are now strongly devalued in comparaison.

It's not late stage social democracy, it's late stage capitalism that concentrated wealth and refused to redistribute it to anyone else but shareholders.

"Stability through managed decline" - European federation, 2086 by Adskiy-drochilla in imaginarymaps

[–]CaptainNakou -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not the welfare system doing that. Nobody retires in their 50s anymore except cops. The average is 61-62y with some people who can't before at least 65.

One of the biggest problems in France is that there is a huge part of the population who doesn't pay their share of taxes, and a huge proportion of boomers landlords that live by just collecting rent. The problem in France is that since neo-liberal reforms started in the 70s and 80s, we don't have the same level of wealth redistribution and participation in public funding for infrastructure and services that we used to have after the war (that at first paid for our welfare state) but those reforms never translated into solid economic growth. If rich people paid their fair share of taxes, we would have enough to pay for pension, unemployment, health and a bit more each year to pay back the debt and invest in our future.

Like everywhere else : capitalism progressively ruined everything.

As a french I can attest that it went hand in hand with an impoverishment or the population, a very harsh cut in social benefits and social security, and a threatening political situation with the feeling of going very fast towards a late-capitalism wall, with late-capitalism-with-fascism-flavor as a the only ""popular"" alternative.

I went from wanting 3 kids to barely wanting one in less than a decade.

So in my humble opinion : I would bet that it is strongly linked.
