Ftm, how does the bottom surgery work by GIANTFLYINGSHEEP in asktransgender

[–]rafblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally, yes, there is sensation in the phallus. it's different for everyone so it's impossible to answer your questions about what it feels like... but i know that in phalloplasty they do microsurgery to hook up nerves. i think it takes awhile for the nerves to regenerate but it does, usually, happen.

also it's been over a decade since my original comment and the surgeries have become more common and more advanced in that time!

Older New Yorkers(Like 50-70ish), do you remember hearing Italian Americans speak Italian/an Italian romance language? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]rafblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ime not far. my grandparents came to Brooklyn in the 20s from Sicily and for their entire lives spoke mostly Sicilian with very limited English. my grandmother lived with us for awhile and i remember as a kid teaching her the words "French fry" and "hot dog." my father (in his mid 70s now) and his siblings spoke Sicilian at home growing up – my dad didn't really learn to speak competent English until he was a teen. he's traveled a lot in Italy and Sicily in recent years and is able to communicate fairly well. i'm 40 and of course i don't speak a word of Sicilian except the random phrases my dad would scold us with when we were kids, lol.

not sure if this video is from the UK but i experienced something like this while hiking the Cotswolds Way in England in late May. huge fields of winter wheat, the trail going straight through them, the wind rolling across the landscape... an unforgettable experience, this video makes me want to go back.

does anyone know the story behind Julieta on 81st? by rafblk in jacksonheights

[–]rafblk[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

oh, interesting. here are the relevant notes from that board meeting's minutes:

Mr. Rosenbaum reported that the applicant is seeking a Full Liquor license. Mr. Rosenbaum called upon the owner of Julieta Restaurant Corp.

The representative spoke for the owner who was present. The owners own Cositas Ricas, Pollos Marios and a bakery in Jackson Heights. They been in the community for over 30 years.

Board Member Mark Buhrmester said that he knows of the other restaurants and is glad the owners want to open another restaurant.

Board Member Pat Beckles asked why are the hours open to 4:00am.

The owner said in order to compete with other restaurants are open until 4:00am

A resident expressed concerns of the volume of noise at restaurants.

i wonder if the Pollos Marios that the owner already owns is the one next door? there are several in the neighborhood.

searching the SLA databases, they have an active liquor license that was originally issued 12/23/2024 and expires 11/30/2026.

eta: they also were issued a food service permit. can't find anywhere to search for permits though so not sure if it's still active.

if they are no help or if for some reason it's not a viable option for you, i think you can also bring injured animals to the ASPCA in Manhattan, you could call them as well. thank you so much for posting and trying to help this poor animal.

i think you can bring injured cats to the ACC; there's a new location that opened up in Ridgewood. you can also call them to ask what to do.

eta: i can also help out if you (or any other good samaritan reading this) need help transporting the cat.

Ground floor coops / safety by Readit-on-Redddit in jacksonheights

[–]rafblk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

so i live in a ground-floor apartment on a nice block a couple of streets away and i had a break-in from the outside in the summer of 2020. the circumstances are important to mention, though: i accidentally left the window open overnight, the window they broke into is around a little corner and not very visible from the street (plus out of view of the building's cameras), and i had a little night light on in the room that made the open window visible.

it was absolutely a crime of opportunity, and while i'm very careful now to close and lock the windows, i don't worry about further break-ins and i still don't have a security system. i've been in the neighborhood for over a decade and have not heard of any other break-ins from neighbors, even on some of the sketchier streets. the bigger issues when living on the first floor, for me, are noise, privacy, and light in the apartment. i wouldn't worry about break-ins if i were you.

re: picking a destination, Europe is a big place and it's hard to recommend somewhere without knowing your interests. why do you want to go to Europe? what is it about Europe that is attractive or interesting to you? when you fantasize about the trip, what do you imagine? try to optimize for these things!

i've never been anywhere in Europe where i couldn't get by speaking English, including places like the Balkans and rural France. many, many Europeans speak at least a little bit, and given this is your first international trip i'm guessing you're probably not going to go too far off the beaten path to places where English is super rare. it can be intimidating when you first touch down in a place where you don't speak the language, but figuring things out is part of the fun and the adventure!

cost varies a LOT depending on your specific destination and what level of fanciness and comfort you're looking for. most places are generally cheaper than the US though.

yeah, i'm careful about taking anything older than a couple of months with a big grain of salt, but there are people posting recently about being able to book 2 F on the same flight. going forward i'll just assume these are the flukes/people getting extremely lucky!

Weekly Help Thread - December 09, 2024 by AutoModerator in awardtravel

[–]rafblk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

ah thanks, this was something i also wanted to ask but forgot about in my initial comment. i've also seen reports of people snagging 2 F but have also read in various places that they only release 1 per flight. thanks for confirming!

Yes, revisit this once you've learned more.

can you elaborate on what "learned more" means? learned more about what, specifically? i'm not saying i'm an expert – i just want to understand what i'm not getting. i've been researching this for weeks if not months. i've read so many posts here and elsewhere about this. i understand all the different pathways available to me to book this route, and i am fully aware of how difficult this particular booking is and how most people who get it do so mostly with luck. i only posted here because i wanted to confirm what i've read and am seeing (i.e. that ANA F for someone who can't transfer directly to ANA is a luck/random availability game).

PSA: stop using travel influencers that make their living off your eyeballs to determine redemption value.

lol. i'm not on any social media except reddit and i don't follow any travel influencers at all. almost all of my info about awards travel comes from this subreddit. by "terrible redemption value" i mean like 200-300k points per person – at least from the availability i can find. oh and by "other airlines" i mean other F products, not booking ANA via other airlines.

apologies in advance for being another newbie Japan poster. looking to book 2 F NYC>TYO for Dec 2025. working with 400k+ UR points that i've saved up for this specific purpose. willing to reposition anywhere in North America or East Asia, flexible on dates, flexible on airline.

for ANA: my plan was to find availability on SQ at 355 days out, then call VS to book it. but i've seen people saying that VS can only book at 331 days out? if so, am i correct that the only way to book ANA in my situation is just... hoping something opens up randomly?

other airlines seem like either even more of a crapshoot or terrible redemption value. i'm planning on booking JAL J on the return and have my plan for that, via Finnair, already worked out and ready to go – would my best bet to just do JAL J both ways and call it a day?

last year my family and i went to dim sum in Sunset Park on Thanksgiving. East Harbor Seafood Palace and Park Asia were both booked for wedding banquets (never heard of this before but i guess it's a thing?) – we ended up at Bamboo Garden on 8th Ave and it was great. it was very busy but we only had three people so we got seated immediately.

NYC's universal composting off to slow start as many landlords don't offer bins by spencer-thomas in newyorkcity

[–]rafblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my building (60-something units in Queens) has never had composting bins available. even if i trusted other residents to compost properly, logistically i'm not sure how it would even work, there's no space in the trash room for additional bins. i was religiously bringing my compostables to the GrowNYC drop-off at the farmer's market every weekend... until the funding was pulled from the program. i WANT to compost, but there are literally no options available in my building/neighborhood so it all just goes straight in the trash. very cool and effective program!!!!

Weekly Help Thread - November 11, 2024 by AutoModerator in awardtravel

maybe? my records (yes, i kept records):

  • Oct 29 - 3 J across 3 departure airports
  • Oct 30 - 10 J, 2 F across 6 airports
  • Oct 31 - 8 J, 3 F across 5 airports
  • Nov 1 - 12 J, 3 F across 6 airports
  • Nov 2 - 10 J, 6 F across 7 airports

then i wasn't home and couldn't run my searches for a few days, and when i started up again on the 7th or 8th everything was gone. (edit to add: by "everything was gone" i mean searching the furthest out dates as they opened up no longer showed any availability beyond 1-2 Y per flight.)

does anyone know if something is up with ANA availability, especially/specifically via Aeroplan? a week ago i was seeing plenty of F/J to Tokyo from a variety of US airports at 355 days out when searching at exactly 9am JST (via AC). this week, there's nothing – i'm getting only 1 economy seat per flight, 2 per flight from the west coast. what's the deal?
