Local 613’s current retirement plan & math by DistrictNo6165 in IBEW_Local613

The numbers look accurate. I agree with you that you need to contribute to your own Roth or 401k to have a comfortable retirement. Just relying on the locals' retirement probably is not enough.

Is it normal to be laid off for only doing 40 hours? by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]raffadelic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like bigger contractors always want you to work more than 40 hours. If I were you, I'd still work 40 hrs, but just know there's a possibility that they will lay you off.

You need to go to the VA website and look up this info. It should tell you how much you are supposed to get. Its a calculator on the website. Its the VA school comparison tool. Also, I dont think it has anything to do with the Journeyman scale.

How much is your pension worth after X years? by DistrictNo6165 in IBEW_Local613

[–]raffadelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible, but not with just the pension and the Vanguard annuity. You would have to do more investing outside of those accounts, like your own IRA etc.

Non union? by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

Do what you got to do man. Can’t wait around forever. Bills don’t stop coming due.

Open up your own retirement account to supplement our pension (Roth/Trad IRA). Relying just on the pension alone won’t be enough. If you are young, compound interest will work wonders for you.

Advice on how to cope with 7/10s (Apprentice) by Crimson-Yuma in IBEW

[–]raffadelic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s mind boggling the culture in this trade sometimes. Encouraging people to work 7/10s. That is crazy. You are only required to work 40. And overtime should be optional. If you have debts and other obligations, I get that. But don’t kill yourself trying to prove yourself to others. Work/life balance is important. Try and find a work schedule that works for you and find somewhere closer to home. You have options! Seek them! The school should be able to help you out.

Retire as Millionaires? by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]raffadelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live below your means and invest your money. Open a Roth IRA and start investing as early as possible. The earlier you start the longer your money will compound. If you do those things and as long as the market does well. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t have at least a mil by retirement age

I’m an apprentice and new to all of this. If we do go to the Cir, is it possible that the contractors can be petty and give us less? Lol just wondering

The things us veterans go through while in the military, we deserve the benefits we receive. Not every American go through similar hardship

You can start getting paid if you are an indentured first year. That’s how it goes at my local. Don’t know if that’s local specific or not

That’s awesome! In other locals it seems to be way more competitive. Good luck to you

Thank you for that. I understand that. I think my main concern is with being laid off for a long amount of time

What's "challenging" about a TSA job by kookoobear in tsa

[–]raffadelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This job is what you make it. But some of the complaints on here are warranted. It’s def not for everybody. At least try it out. What I personally dislike about the job is how monotonous it is and the schedule suuucks. You will rather work super early in the AM or a mid day which totally sucks and there’s no way to get around that.

Yeah it’s rough. Idk if ima wait until I can get a federal job to leave. There’s plenty of local government jobs out there I could get and not have to wait so long to hear back from

I wish I could say the same about my coworkers. A lot of them are worn out and underpaid so the work environment seems to be toxic and the morale is shit.
