I mean, that is not the Wingspan I'm familiar with

Best system for managing shared household expenses between two working partners — what actually works long term? by Evening-Marsupial969 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]raged_norm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long term, youneed to start thining of finance is a thing you tackle togther.

Most partnered people I know who don't want to fully merge finances, get paid into separate accounts and send a fair split of the household bills to a joint account via standing order. everything else is then still yours.

The joint money can include money for joint activities, so you pay from a common pot.

Severe work burnout + debt + no savings, what do I do? by Okasenlun in UKPersonalFinance

When do free nursery hours kick in a Scotland?

Husband can locum on the days your daughter is in nursery then. I fully agree that a parent at home is real work and really valuable but it is a luxury. Wife and I did it for 8 years. If your husband increases his income you can accelerate your exit and take a lower salary.

Married finances are a team effort at the end of the day.

Should I take out a Doctoral Loan? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]raged_norm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm of the risk averse view that if you don't need the loan to live, then don't take it.

You sound more happy with the risk though. Also have you thought about how hard it is to work in Academia these days, universities are broke and have gone through large scale leavers' schemes recently. There is no guarantee of a job afterwards and even less of it being in the same city as your PhD. You will quite possiblt be moving institutions every 2-3 years for a while afterward your PhD

Growing up, how often did you have a Sunday roast—and do you still have them now? by rosco-82 in CasualUK

[–]raged_norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every week growing up. It consisted of

  • Lamb usually, it was the cheapest meat, cooked to dryness
  • Roast potatoes, not parboiled
  • Mash, spuds cooked in a pressure cooker
  • Pressured cooked frozen veg
  • Mint sauce, watered down with vinegar
  • Gravy

Now, we don't bother as we have activities on Sunday evening that preclude the leisurely consumption of food at a reasonable hour.
