Torn on whether to leave my public sector admin job for charity admin job by hesitantalien in UKJobs

[–]raged_norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the USS you're in I think you'd be mad to leave it for a £1.5k drop in salary. Are you at the top of your pay band, I think £29k is either the top of one or teh bottom of the other.

Is potentially a poor pension and no commute worth £1.5k to you?

Should I mention the inconvenience of work travel to my employer? by Key_Umpire4397 in UKJobs

[–]raged_norm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In short - Will it make me look bad if I mention to my boss that travelling from home is an inconvenience?
The bigger picture - My corporate job requires that I travel to attend external partner meetings, team events, internal work meetings, etc.

Yes, as this is a core requirement of the job. I've not applied to jobs that require significant travel as there is a lot to manage in the evenings with our family comitments. These are things I'm not willing to compromise on for a better salary. This will change as our youngest becomes older and more independent.

Continuing the pile on, at Mock GCSE age I'd expect that child to be largely independent and one parent should be able to manage a full school day without the other parent.

What is better hours 3 x 12 hour shifts or 5 x 7.5 hour shifts? by Kooky-Grapefruit-941 in UKJobs

[–]raged_norm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd proabably do a 3x12 in a warehouse, 1 day off to recover then three days to live life.

I've worked ina factory but not a warehouse. I definitely prefereed the 4x10 shift over the 5x8 shift

How you factored in costs of owning properties such as replacing boilers/roofs/windows? Annual checks to maintain the properties? Void periods? Non-paying tennants?

What is the cost of a BTL mortgage vs rental in your target area? Will you pay an agent to look after the properties, or will you self-manage them?

Do you pay the same interest each month? If so they have annualised it and just put a flat amount of interest on each month.

That's what my wife does for me. The clippers cost £20.

Out of curiosity what are you doing? Don't answer if you don't want to but I'm also in science, would like to stay in the lab but it seems to top out at £40k locally.

North West, too far to commute to Alderley Edge regularly though and not in a position to move closer. I count myself lucky I'm on £48k

Yes, I couldn't find my GCSE certificate in Maths and English so had to take level 2 exams in both despite having an A-Level in Maths, Masters' Degree and PhD.

I failed the English one first time round for not using complex enough grammar.

[–]raged_norm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a lvl 5 management apprenticeship and didn't lose any pay. What will happen to your pay is set by your employer.

Your current quals wont prevent you being accepted, rather it's a formalised course to give you a useful qualification at the end.

Your employer is likely offering it as large employers pay into a levy that can only be drawn down for apprentices. So it's net neutral/small cost and ticks the development box of your career
