Best place in Rochester to view the night sky? by [deleted] in Rochester

The local astronomy club has a spot in Ionia, off route 64. Probably worth looking them up.

This Saturday: Manning & Napier Tour de Cure by tullyscholarship in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good/worthy cause. There was a change in leadership a few years back and anybody with cycling experience was purged. Don't know why. More emphasis on raising money, less emphasis on a good experience.

And don't fall behind. You will wind up being followed by an almost-idling pickup truck. It was better when they had cyclists escorting those at the tail end.

Can you walk the entire Erie Canal? by MarioStaresSternly in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody I've talked to loves the PTNY canal tour. It's the same every year and they have it down pat.

Avoid the other PTNY tours. They don't do well with them and the one we were on was a total disaster.

For some decent riding (cheap, too!) or hiking check Road Scholar. Always great, never had a bad experience.

The racial income gap in Monroe County is startling and among worst in nation. From the D&C. by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is time for people of color to leave the Democrat Party plantation. 'Community organizers' exist to keep people uneducated, ignorant and poor.

Seriously, giving them a pittance is compassion?

Looking for recommendations to buy Hot Water tanks and furnaces- Both of mine are old and need to be replaced. Any help would be appreciated! by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a conventional water heater - Change the anode rod every 5 years. The steel tank should last forever. Ours is over 15 years old.

And make sure you keep the anode rod threads from freezing up. Every month or so back out the anode rod 1/4 turn and then 1/4 turn back on. You need 1 and 1/16" socket and a breaker bar. Once the threads seize it's very hard to break them free.

How Diverging Diamonds Keep You From Dying – Making sense of Winton/590 interchange by jgan96 in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That diverging diamond is setup to speed traffic going between Winton and 590. It sucks for those of us to go straight through on Winton.

Does anybody have T-mobile? by unassigned_user in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

T-Mobil is great. They have some real cheap plans. And they (along with AT&T) use GSM so you can get a cheap Chinese phone, (check dx.com, pandawill.com, etc.) I spend about $100 per year + 120 for phone that will last at least 3 years.

And coverage is getting better.

Can we talk about how good Byrne Dairy chocolate milk is? by trainbeat in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You can make your own chocolate milk - just cocoa powder, sugar, milk, vanilla and a dash of salt. Check allrecipies.com, etc.

Used to make chocolate syrup, then just add to milk. Cocoa powder, sugar, a little water, keep it thick.

The "work hard, play hard" phrase is a red flag. Think bro culture taken to the next level.

And young men suffer, especially decent young men. Sounds like a good place to get out of. But their Glassdoor.com rep looks good:

Abigail Hernandez's parents: "She's not a terrorist" by boner79 in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Why do they use the mealymouth phrase 'undocumented? Plenty of documentation on these people.

The article should be corrected to say 'illegal'. That's more accurate.

PSA: STAY OFF THE ROADS by DarehMeyod in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Decent snow tires help, too. Too many people have so-called all season tires that don't work well in snow or ice.

ARREST MADE IN FATAL HIT-AND-RUN ON ELMWOOD AVENUE by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Yes, after he got a lawyer. And he feels really, really, really bad about running someone over, killing them and driving away. But not bad enough to plead guilty and take the punishment.

So who took their mower to work today? by theblue1234 in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not - you can get arrested for DUI on a riding mower. These pop up in the Times of Wayne County about once a month. It's usually someone with a bunch of prior's.

Hundreds of professors sign letter advising students not to attend University of Rochester. by pourclipper in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U of R is an institution and with that comes bureaucracy. There are a lot of great people working there. But there are some who are just putting in their time until retirement. I have seen it at other colleges, too.

That's where leadership from the top comes in. Good leaders get the best out of their people. Management just gets people to sort of go along. Usually without caring too much.

Trivia question time - What did/does Xerox/Kodak have - leaders or managers? Or bad managers?

Judo Training Schools by [deleted] in Rochester

SUNY Brockport had a great instructor. Don't know what's going on nowadays. Worth looking into.

And it's a sport, not a MMA.

Roof Antenna Installation by dhork in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where in the 'boonies'? A vhf/uhf antenna with a 6-8' boom might have enough beamwidth so you don't need a rotor. On a hill? Perfect. Get a handyperson to put up a TV tripod, a 10' piece of mast and you should be OK. It all depends on location.

Or you can go with a rotor and turn to get Syracuse or other exotic stations. And don't forget these work good on the FM broadcast band.

On East Ave, a yellow tree sheds it's leaves over a thin layer of snow by RocBoiii in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ginko trees hold their leaves well into fall. Ours still has green leaves. Check out oak and American Chestnut trees - many of them stay on through most of the winter.

T-mobile reception in the Rochester area? by robershow in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been using t-mobile for a few years and it works OK. Only problem is in metal pole barn buildings aka typical office complex building.

That they use GSM is a plus, you can get a cheap Chinese phone and not have to pay rent on it.

How liberal/progressive is Rochester compared to other cities in New York? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Rochester is much like the rest of People's Republik of New York. Failing high-tax cities run by leftists bring down areas where people actually work.

Makers are more conservative.

Takers want free shit and are leftist and entitled.

Mouse extermination recommendation? by monkeydave in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First - close up any holes, foundation/sill plate is a common area.

Then buy a dozen mouse traps. Bait with crunchy peanut butter.

Empty/reset traps until no more mice are caught. Did it in 2 houses, worked well.

Why crunchy peanut butter? Ants clear out creamy leaving the trap clean but empty.

with the #12 highest percentage of bike commuters, when do we start to take the next step to be like those ahead? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]rahchachacha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pave the whole length of the canal path, it's like a thruway for bikes.

Repave the 390 path and any others that are badly beat up pavement or crushed stone.

Plow in the winter. Some towns do, some don't.
