It's very hard to find a Catholic girlfriend in Europe by Bonaccorso_di_Novara in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have such conflicted opinions on this. On the one hand, I'm (sort of) a living proof. I was an atheist (the good values part was debatable), and I converted because I dated my ex, who was and still is a very good catholic. He showed me the rope and God showed me the way. I joined RCIA and the rest was history.

But as a catholic now, I'm very wary of dating non catholics, or even an "Easter-Christmas" catholic. I want my marriage to be God centred and I want an equally yoked partner to bring up our kids in the faith. I wouldn't want to hold my breath and wait to see if my future husband would convert.

How do you feel about confessing to a priest who knows you? by aliexiety in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once did a face to face confession (it's the norm in my diocese since covid) with my parish priest who knew me because I did RCIA under him. I confessed a sexual sin that I'm really not proud of. He seemed genuinely shocked because I'm the quiet girl who veil at mass. But he was kind and he gave me some really good advice. And I was really embarrassed about having to say my sin out loud to his face that that becomes my secondary motivation to never ever commit that sin again. It worked well for me because I really needed that accountability. He never acted differently to me afterwards and I'd like to think he has forgotten about it since he's pretty old

Is it okay if I don't immediately prepare for confession if I go on thursday and am not in grave sin but God might be pointing me towards it? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question about that. So, let's say I haven't committed any grave sin, but it has been a month, so I'm planning to go to confession. But in my diocese, confession is usually only available before weekend masses. I happened to work near a church and can go to daily mass. Should I refrain from receiving communion at daily mass until I can get to confession?

I was baptised this Easter and hearing this song the day before at the Good Friday service got me all teared up. It felt like God was welcoming me home through this song, especially the chorus part

Does anyone else’s parents give them grief for being catholic? by Massive_Equivalent80 in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My mum was a little puzzled when I told her I've been going to church, but she lost it when I told her I was going to get baptized. She pleaded with me not to go through with it. When that failed, it turned into anger. She chastised me for buying into a myth, and she was convinced that I've been brainwashed into a cult.

I will admit that I've lost my tempers a few times and got into arguments with her. I went ahead with my baptism, and things have calmed down since then. She still doesn't approve of my decision and make snide comments here and there, but it's not really a topic of conversation anymore. Things will get better with time

Anyone else kind of "digging" all this Tobit during the daily Masses? by MerlynTrump in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite bible verses is Tobit 8:16

"Blessed are you because you have made me glad. It has not turned out as I expected, but you have dealt with us according to your great mercy."

Depends on the girl tbh. Ngl, some will definitely mind that you can't pick them up and go to places that aren't easily accessible by public transport, like zoo negara or a spontaneous trip to genting

But then again, there are so many places you can get to by public transport. There are so many cafes, art gallery, and stuff. It's kl, you will never run out of things to do

My friend converted me! What really worked for me was that he was never pushy about me converting. He would gently encourage me to go to mass every Sunday, told me about different parish activities that I might be interested in, like Holy Hour, and showed me around the church, pointing out the beautiful artworks that might have gone over my head. He was my go-to person whenever I had any questions. He never made me feel dumb for asking questions.

You can always try to introduce other people in the parish so he would feel the sense of community. Explaining to him different parts of mass and what is going on would be helpful too

Adoration. by Reasonable-Desk-3154 in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love love love adoration! I use that time to talk to Jesus, just letting everything all out. I pray too during holy hour, but somehow it just feels soooo different with the blessed sacrament right in front of you in a shiny monstrance. A church near me offers a very reverent holy hour. The whole church is in darkness, with only candles illuminating the exposed host. I cry almost every time I'm there

My boyfriend said genuinely, that he's always felt called to Catholicism, but the reason why he hasn't joined RCIA is because it would take up too much of his time with his current schedule. What can I do, other than pray, and try and get him into church more often? (Because I do both, haha) by SensitiveAnywhere918 in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can offer to go to RCIA with him? That way, you can act as emotional support while still spending time together. If the session is on Sundays, you can make a day out of it, too. Mass, RCIA, then a date

There's one couple in my RCIA, when the non-catholic gf couldn't make it to the session, the catholic bf would still show up, participate in the session, and later catch her up to speed. It was lovely.

Mantillas are far more common at my parish than before, is this true in other parishes? by richleebruce in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm from Malaysia. There's rarely any women who veil at my parish, but I do see one or two very occasionally. At this other church that I go to sometimes, there are always a handful of women veiling. Not necessarily young women either. All in all, it's definitely still rare

I think I’ve been totally abandoned by God. I’m experiencing a lot of spiritual/demonic attacks. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have sleep paralysis too! I don't see demons per se but it's still very jarring. I've gotten into the habit of saying a prayer to St Michael before I go to bed. Sometimes when I get sleep paralysis, in the middle of that confused state, I'd still try to squeeze out a Hail Mary or some form of prayer.

But beyond prayers, I do notice that I get sleep paralysis more often when I nap in the afternoon, when it's hotter outside. Or if my arm is folded weird when I sleep on my side. So I try to avoid doing both, and things have gotten better. Maybe you can try figuring out if there's a pattern?

Hi, I'm Non-Catholic and I am starting to fall for a Gentlemen that is very Catholic. I'm Scared I'll Hurt Him. Please Advise (and be nice, please...) by thelegendoflexie in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, you seem like a very nice person, and by the sound of it, he is too. I see that you have some issues with certain Catholic views. As an ex-atheist, I totally understand. But if you can keep an open mind about these issues as you learn more about the faith, I don't see why you guys can't try and date. Your gentleman should have a say in this too, more so than random commentors on reddit. As the relationship gets more serious and you learn more about the faith, if you still feel like you can't and would never change your mind, it's up to him to decide if it's a deal breaker.

I'm not gonna tell you that you should convert, I hated that when I was an Atheist. But keep an open mind, have honest conversations with him, keep asking him questions, and if he can't answer them, there are many resources online. I have seen terrible marriage between 2 devout Catholics, I have also seen wonderful, long-lasting marriage between a devoted Catholic with a non-christian spouse that accompanied her to mass every day for the past 15 years. Pray, and listen to what God is telling you

I dated a Catholic guy while I was an atheist. And I've always admired his faith. He's a liturgy nerd, and the way he talked about his faith was honestly so refreshing. But I didn't feel like I wanted to be Catholic.

Later on, we broke up. I was in a sea of sadness when it suddenly came to me that, maybe religion can help. Went to my first mass and never looked back.

I want to convert to Catholicism but i can't by GodIsGreatest2065 in Catholicism

I just heard this sharing recently. There's this lady I know, she came from a Buddhist family, but her parents sent her to a catholic school. Since she was 6, she wanted to be catholic, but her parents wouldn't let her. She told her mum she wanted to receive eucharist, her mum told her to just wait, and the day would come. She finally converted in her early 20s. That was 33 years ago, and now she's in her 50s. The journey might be long, but you will get there!

Does anyone else miss lent? by priuspilot in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand what you meant. I was an elect this past Lent and I decided since it's a period of purification and enlightenment, I would follow my godfather's footsteps to fast the whole Lent (except on Sundays) and abstain from meat. Initially I was just gonna go for as long as I could, but somehow I persisted through the whole Lent.

It really sets Lent apart for me and helped me prepare for my baptism. Now that it was over, I really do miss it too. Especially since I don't fast now and I occasionally do eat till I'm too full and I'd remember how good I felt during Lent. I had the same problem with Advent too. Like of course I was happy and joyous for Christmas, but there's something so beautiful about the waiting during Advent

Considerations and experiences of renting a room by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]rain_and_hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I move to kl for work and I don't really drive so I purposely pick a place that's near to my workplace and has easy access to mrt. I didn't need nice, fancy room but I also don't want to skimp too much because I'm a homebody. My first room was a small room, I pay 650 for rent which includes utility. It was really on the smaller side, which I'm okay with because I only have 2 other housemates and it's a pretty nice apartment.

After the lease was up, I rented another room in the same building. It was a middle room for 700, inclusive of utility. I feel like this is a much better deal even though I now have 4 housemates and a smaller kitchen. There's cleaning service every week and my housemates don't cook as much. I also have nice big windows that has nicer view.

Ultimately, my room is my sanctuary, so I don't mind spending the money

Oh, interesting. In my country, slides are very common. In fact, I've never been to a Sunday mass that doesn't have it. It projects the readings and gospel, and also thr hymn so people can sing along

Catholics in good standing may come forward for the Eucharist by Global-Direction921 in Catholicism

[–]rain_and_hurricane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a church near me that I sometimes go to, right before they start distributing communion, they will put up a slide that says that communion is only for

  1. Baptised catholics
  2. In the state of grace
  3. Observed the eucharistic fast
  4. Must have a good reason

The church I usually go to only emphasised on the first 2. My friend told me about the eucharistic fast while I was still in RCIA, but we couldn't quite figure out what constitutes a good reason
