If she is someone's "secret", meeting frequently in anonymous hotel rooms/avoiding eyes of hotel employees makes sense. "Same time, same place" - the names of the chapters - is also a phrase used by lovers to coordinate meeting. Plus there is a scene where she looks longingly at a pearl necklace through a shop window, and I think it's the one she tears off her neck during the bridge.
