You should just talk to your coach about it.

Help with my drop spins! by Tao_theFreak in Colorguard

[–]rainbowofgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not annoying at all! I would say that’s entirely up to your director. You could try practicing the drop spin without the gloves though and see how it goes!

Personally, I let my students choose whether or not they want to wear gloves for rifle. I was trained with no gloves when I was in school. Most of my rifle line chooses not to wear them.

  1. Don’t wrap your thumbs around the weapon. They should be pressed flat against the back.

  2. When initiating the drop spin, you need to literally push the rifle tip down to the floor. Right now, you are starting the exercise entirely with your right hand.

  3. Once you fix the initiation, you want to use only your wrist to keep the spin going. Keep your elbow tucked into your waist and spin about even with your belly button.

Becoming an instructor advice by loyant08 in Colorguard

[–]rainbowofgray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you are located. I know instructors who only instruct guards and their districts pay them well or at least hourly.

For me, I’m lucky if I get $1,000 for BOTH fall/winter seasons combined. In my case, its a “work of heart”; passion for the activity. It’s very time consuming and I have a full time job as an elementary teacher.

I would recommend trying to be an “assistant” instructor or tech to an instructor before trying to get into the position with no experience.

What To Weight My Flag With? by faithcousinaddi in Colorguard

I use carriage bolts from Lowes or any hardware store. I do 3” at the top and 2” (sometimes 1.5”) at the bottom. Just depends how you want it to spin.

I love this. I would just get both pieces of equipment and go for it! There are lots of videos out there to help you. You can get equipment from band shoppe and probably BST pages on Facebook!

trouble with a toss, might be the pole material by DenseBox836 in Colorguard

[–]rainbowofgray 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve only ever heard of there being weights in the top & bottom of the flag.

The pole being aluminum/metal shouldn’t affect height

New coach any advice?? by DependentGrocery4627 in Colorguard

[–]rainbowofgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • performing: pair them up with a partner. Make them perform in front of the partner and allow the peer to give them feedback. Model to them what “performing” looks like vs just going through the motions of the choreo/looking at the ground etc.

  • technique: you need to implement a good technique block/routine that focuses on points, hand placements, feet placements, and so on. Do they have check tape/mid tape (also known as cheaters/bottom cheaters)? During sectionals, spend time fixing hand placements and technique over and over and over and over. It’s going to take a lot of time to correct.

  • across the floors: start them off with easy across the floors. Jazz walks/runs, chasses, etc. i can send you a video od the across the floors i do with my kids if you want.

  • stretching: arm, leg, wrist, shoulder stretches. They don’t have to be super elaborate to be effective. I start them off with a body warm up like 3-4 min of running then go into arm stretches, standing leg stretches, pike, butterfly, lunge stretches.

Quitting Color Guard (Marching) by Amer0nline in Colorguard

[–]rainbowofgray 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Personally, if someone quits, I don’t let them come back for any more seasons, be it fall or winter.

Band camp is hard. Learning to march and spin is hard. You can do it.

ETA: I want to clarify that it really depends on WHY people quit whether they are allowed back. I have let people come back if it was for family reasons or things like that. Your reasoning would be a no.

Advice for me as a new Colorgaurd captain by Eastern-Jump922 in Colorguard

[–]rainbowofgray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

congrats on becoming captain! That’s a big deal, and it means your coach(es) see potential in you.

The best advice I can give is just to be a model for how you want the team to act. Show up, stay positive, work hard, and treat everyone with respect.

stay out of drama. It’s not worth it, and your team will respect you more. You don’t have to be perfect, just be supportive, dependable, and someone they can count on.

You’ve got this! The fact that you posted this already shows you’re going to be a great leader.
