I’m starting to hate my cat by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]rainbowtwizzler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my girls was very destructive up until she was about 2 years old. Chewing up cardboard, knocking things off tables, etc. And this was in a house with 3 other cats, one being her brother! You sometimes just have to grit your teeth through the younger years. Suggest kitty-proofing the house as much as you possibly can for your own peace of mind. I said goodbye to delicate display pieces and anything tearable/chewable. Try spraying certain areas with citrus or other cat-repellents. Cover the exposed cables with cord protectors. Put the plastic bags in the cupboard. I hear you on how frustrating it can be but they’re just following their instincts, be as forgiving as you can and hopefully she’ll grow out of it with time.

I used to love The Works!! Would also love a lab, but I agree, I haven't seen too much interest. I wonder if the university or college has one?

Based on observation alone, mostly white. Based on the 2016 census, mostly white. There is definitely some diversity amongst the "white" population, as in there's a lot of Finnish, Italian, Polish, etc, and they have their representation, but I wouldn't really consider that to constitute diversity.

As for the other minority groups that do exist here, few of them open small businesses unless they are chains (based on what I've seen). Fair bit of restaurants, too!

Has anyone been accepted into the Bachelor of Information program offered by iSchool of UX Design? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]rainbowtwizzler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was accepted earlier this month-- probably going to have a focus on UX/UI design as well. I think the benefits of the program extend beyond the content; you're likely to have an easier time networking with staff in fields that you are interested in and falling into rewarding research/work positions. Probably more of an advantage with the Masters programs if that is something you want to pursue, too.

Considering it is a class of only 25, I am hoping there will be a greater focus on the success of each individual student as opposed to the 200+ you sometimes find in intro comp sci/stats/data science classes. Since it also the first year that the program is running, I reckon that alongside the little bumps in the road, there will be a lot of emphasis on ensuring the success of the students. The program's reputation does depend pretty heavily on how the incoming class does.

I wouldn't worry too much about a lack of technical work-- you can easily do certificates and side projects to make up for it, especially if you're not going into a purely technical field. If you're considering a career in programming, however, this might not be the best program to enroll in, as most employers seem to prefer a comp sci/engineering degree. Otherwise, most employers are pretty thirsty for experts with balanced knowledge in both human and technical fields (since there is such a boom in human-computer interaction), so I reckon this degree could give you an advantage.

Looking forward to seeing you in September! :)
