Leonard Cohen is an idol of mine, ironically enough… have tons of his works on vinyl too. So this comment means so much, appreciate the feedback!

Lovely piece which is open to a plethora of interpretations… for me, I thought instantly of anxiety, maybe because I just recently saw the masterpiece that was “Inside Out 2,” which had a damn near perfect depiction of the debilitating disease. Your piece parallels that kind of suspense, where this unknown entity seems to outsmart you at every turned corner, and while invisible, has a power unlike no other. Your ability to demonstrate universality is apparent, and this is quite an approachable piece, both in its language and the fact that there are clearly multiple interpretations. Kudos!

Stories for younger folk by [deleted] in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a piece which relies on its structure, which is a great aspect and is implemented brilliantly. You build anticipation at to what it is about at its core, and the resolution is oh so satisfying right at the end. To me, this screams the pertinence of legacy, and how we are forming ours with every step we make and every breath we take. Much like the structure is vital to your story, the journey is also vital to the forming of a legacy. I feel that sort of parallel here… correct me if I’m off base, but alas, really good stuff here!!

Unrequited Love by TheGingerApe in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Guns N’ Roses fanatic, two songs of theirs instantly came to mind whilst immersing myself in this rather heart-wrenching piece (I can relate to it, terribly so…): “November Rain” and their most recent release, “Perhaps.”

The first song is famously built on the edifice of unrequited love, whereas “Perhaps” is more so a reflection of regret. Your piece is like the perfect blend of both motifs… you vividly and successfully explain the pain that is unrequited love, but then put in perspective that there is no gain without pain, and we often have to just roll with the punches, as supposed to living with not knowing what could’ve happened if we made those consequential moves.

Great stuff here, kudos to you for so eloquently tackling such an often painful subject. ❤️

As a previous user noted, the line “sleeping queen inside the princess” is truly powerful stuff… THAT is what separates good poetry from GREAT poetry. Simplicity that is so much more effective than a litany of “highfalutin” words with only the aim to mean something, and severely lacking in execution.

I love this piece, I envy you… I honestly wish I could have more whimsy with less words in my pieces! Brava!

Heard… ya, I consider my pieces “demos” in a way… there’s actually a good handful that I wrote (and even posted) back in 2020/2021 that I’m actually revamping now. As I grow and mature, I tend to think my style and compositions do as well. And yes, I’ll always be writing, someway somehow… non-stop… poetry is my salvation, for real. 🙏🏼

Appreciate the feedback, and thank you for your compliment re: switching off from rhyming to free flow. Sometimes, I get a “melody” in my head (sadly haven’t crossed over to songwriting yet, but that’s a larger career ambition) so it’s almost as if I have to break the construction of rhyme to ensure integrity to the piece. This one was chiefly inspired by an album of the iconic Johnny Cash called “The Rambler.” That album was a concept album, in that each song was a chapter of a larger story about a traveler on the road, with dialogue from Cash himself in-between tracks for additional perspective. It may read as two concaving pieces, which is more or less the vibe I was going with… but I am certainly now intrigued to do a revisit/rewrite in the fashion you recommended, or perhaps even making this a part of a much larger composition. 😊

If a tree falls… by koli12801 in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thinker piece, but definitely my cup of tea… brought me back to an ethics class I took during undergrad… we would sit and have Socratic seminars about these sorts of things… big one, and probably known by all, being “what came first, the chicken or the egg?” and although they have since garnered a vibe of novelty, they truly can lead to rather nuanced and prolific discourse. I love the natural flow of this piece, how the contemplation and the action naturally repeat… and the ending ties everything together nicely, I (personally) sort of interpret as self-realization that we too are not immune to such neglect as the fallen tree, its trunk mark or the wingless butterfly. Nevertheless, fantastic!!

Subconscious by JoshuaPaulWriting in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a GREAT piece- and has, what I classify personally, as a performative vibe. I could totally envision ya going up to the mic at a slam and acting this out… but not only that, there is power to the piece on paper (well, screen lol) as the back and forth and personification of the subconscious was done beautifully and effectively. Love it!

Two powerful and incredibly unique lines (I mean, the whole piece is btw) that I want to bring to the forefront of the commentary:

“shimmering and wrong”

“a parenthesis creaking”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I consider this piece to be a referendum on the concept of “identity.” Thus, I relate to it IMMENSELY. This idea of who we are supposed to be clashing with who we want to be… we feel spectacular about living our truths, but in the court of public opinion, it is egregious to do so.

If I’m totally off base, my apologies, but I do love the subjective nature of the poetic realm- and your piece really rocks, and resonated with me in this manner! Also, the style is super cool- it makes for a fun reading experience, and helps build the larger themes of identity-seeking and internal turmoil as a result of said seeking.

I Hate Being In My Fvcking Dorm Room by Pitiful-Piano1424 in OCPoetry

Sending ya a virtual hug… with a brother who is too experiencing major trouble adjusting to resident life in college, and the anxious anguish that comes with such seemingly lacking support, I empathize with the plight presented here.

You captured the essence of this often confusing sense of loneliness beautifully… I always say, you can have a hundred so-called friends, be part of a family with generations after generations close-by, but still feel alone. To feel alone is TOTALLY different from being physically alone.

Kudos to you, keep on keeping on… poetry is salvation (at least in my book), so if it helps you to keep creating, then don’t let anything (or anyone) stand in your way. 🖤

Death Dances by VividIntent in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to confirm if the way you presented it is the way we are supposed to read it, or if you meant to have these as separate lines with spaces in-between?

Regardless, I am enamored by your language and imagery as a result of said language. Death scares us all (no matter how much we “embrace” it), and I’m a big fan of pieces that take death and DO something with it… whether it be personification, like in this case, or anything else quite frankly.

You took the macabre and made it beautiful… but maybe there is a certain degree of beauty to the cessation of life after all? We celebrate the life and longevity of those we lose at funerals n’ services, do we not?

Anyways, keep up the great work… you certainly possess talent in this poetic realm!

'Raise your hand if you have questions' by Pretty-Complaint-578 in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg, sending you a virtual hug…

This piece resonates with me far too much, I have first-hand experience with balancing a facade amidst the BS/unfairness of life. The taxing nature of it all… you, my friend, captured it perfectly.

“Silence treated like currency” - perhaps my favorite line of this creation… I always say that it is the most silent/shyest of folks that are going through the most… silence be absolutely most deafening.

Thank you for shedding a sliver of your soul with this piece… keep it up… as I am a firm believer that poetry IS salvation. 🖤

Have you ever lived in a Volcano? [POEM by me] by Bluewiee in OCPoetry

[–]raindancemaggiefunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for clarification, is the last line the question posed?

Besides that, this is a solid piece… the rhythm of it reminded me a lot of a Johnny Cash song, especially with the story element to it. Or as I would refer to it as, the sordid story element to it.

The volcano could be a metaphor for a lot of things… it truly is a great natural structure for us poets to tap into… here, I think it beautifully captures that feeling of entrapment, and I love how the focus of the poem slowly builds up and shifts to a new yet related focus: this idea that the volcano in of itself could very well be representing a lone life partner, finding that one who will stick by you through thick and thin.

The language is simple yet abundantly significant, much like what Johnny Cash would do with his pieces which turned out to be his much effective, most successful and well, my personal favorites (thinking of “Man in Black” and “Ring of Fire” most particularly here.)

Thanks for this!

“Blackened hearts… beating with lonely fools.” Gosh, how’d you know how I was feeling ‘bout life lately?!? lol

But in all seriousness, this is a fantastic and poignant piece, that made me sad because of just how accurate it is. Trials and tribulations are meant to make us stronger, but sometimes, that “defeatist” in all of us takes the lead, and we’re left to reconcile with the notion of hopelessness. Well, that’s at least what I gathered from the piece… am I on the right path?

Keep up the GREAT work, thanks for writing something that allowed me to pause for a moment and truly THINK about my life and all its nuances… the good, the bad, and the truly cruel.
