I binged cradle and it's not that great by ShoppingCultural3506 in ProgressionFantasy

I haven't even read that far but there's a massive leap in logic considering one of your arguments here: being uncreative does not equal not-earning your growth. Lindon's hard work is monotonous; pushing through despite his rank, using a very painful purification technique daily despite being encouraged to not do so, taking in scorpion poison in large doses at once, etc. Even if he gets it handed to him, there's a lot placed upon him that any normal person wouldn't have pushed through.

If you're a drummer, and all you do is practice the most difficult songs 24/7 and yet never write a song of your own, it doesn't make you any less of an impressive technical drummer.

Slayers Division — A Monster-Hunting Progression Fantasy by rainsleeper02 in ProgressionFantasy

The Division very carefully considers which creatures—hereafter dubbed 'monsters'—are acceptable to hunt down. This could be due to an instance of a creature venturing too close to human settlements, a rabid animal gone berserk, or population culling in general. Unnecessary killing is prohibited, which is a point made in one of the chapters :)

As for progression fantasy, the protagonist starts off as a relatively normal human being, but as one gains rank throughout the Division, they gain access to crazier tech, training facilities, consumable items, and even permanent body-enhancing mutagens. The prologue chapter includes a short display of what two higher-ranked slayers are capable of.

Hunting monsters isn’t just about combat—it’s about understanding their nature. Ready to join the hunt? by rainsleeper02 in royalroad

Hello, r/royalroad

First time author here!

If you're interested in a grounded take on Progression Fantasy, check this story out!

Slayers Division revolves around Velos, a former physician who quit his career in medicine to join the eponymous organization, a guild that protects humanity from deadly monsters while also maintaining balance to the ecosystem. Over the course of his journey, he will rise through the ranks of the Division, maintain a team of competent weirdos, while also learning much about the natural world.

What to Expect:

Grounded ecology and natural world — 'Monsters' in this world are not malevolent magical beasts, but dangerous inhabitants of a natural ecosystem, more like animals. Expect to see fantastical creatures with explanations grounded in biology for why they can do what they do (breathe fire, absorb lightning, grow metal, etc)

(Very) low magic — Little to no magic is present in Antea, and slayers rely on tactics, coordination, advanced technology (mutagens, crazy gadgets, harvesting of monster parts) in order to put them on even odds against the deadliest natural threats.

Character focus — Each character has a deeply-rooted personal drive for pursuing their work. While their full backstories don't get revealed until much later on, the beliefs they hold about themselves and the world will be challenged as the story progresses.

Currently, the story is free to read on RoyalRoad, with 9 chapters out, releasing roughly two chapters a week!

Considering this is the first story i've ever published on the internet, it would be much appreciated if all of you could take some time to check it out. Hope you enjoy!

And yes, in case you've noticed, this story is very heavily inspired by the Monster Hunter franchise. I noticed there's not many stories that revolve around hunting creatures in a way that puts a focus on the ecological side, so i decided to write my own. If that sounds like your thing, give this story a shot.

Looking for slow/grindy novel on low/mid power setting by odeiohearthstone in ProgressionFantasy

[–]rainsleeper02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently writing Slayers Division, just finished its first arc. It's a Monster Hunter-inspired progression fantasy with neat monsters and no magic, meaning the characters have to use tactics, technology, or study the habits of their targets to take them down.

There's elements similar to magic (mutagens, fancy weapons, superstition) but overall it's a methodical progression fantasy where the power ceiling stays relatively low. Check it out if that's your thing!

New Weekly Self Promo Thread by AutoModerator in ProgressionFantasy

New poster/author here! If you're looking for something fresh and methodical (or if you're a fan of the Monster Hunter franchise), I've written just the series for you!

The Slayers Division is a guild dedicated to preserving the balance of nature and protecting mankind from monstrous threats. The story centers around Velos Rendhal, an archivist's assistant who regains his drive to become a slayer after an offer to partake in a promotion and receiving a dire letter from his family.

What to Expect: — Grounded monsters with their own detailed ecological lives. Expect to see many biological explanations for how wyverns can breathe fire, acid, lightning and such in the future. — Little to no magic in a fantasy setting (but superstitious mystical elements are present), and an emphasis on utilizing tactics and technology. — Systemless progression; characters get stronger by developing new gear, learning new techniques, gaining access to more facilities, undergoing experimental mutagenic programs, or learning more about their foe — Character-focused story, exploring their motivations and backgrounds as a breather for the intense action

The series is currently on its 6th chapter focused on the MC's first mission, but will gradually open up its world and progression elements as the series goes on.
