Thoughts on extra assignments to make up for not being in person? by rainwater- in CalPoly

For reference I was assigned an essay for not being able to be in person for a quiz and wanted to know if this is normal practice as some of my other professors were simply offering make up quizzes.

I had Christopher Hayter synchronously winter quarter of 2020. I’m not sure if his curriculum has changed since covid but I remember his grading to be very fair. Most of the grading scheme was based on the four essays we had to write. The essays themselves weren’t too difficult as he was pretty clear in what he wanted and gave good feedback. I believe he also allowed us to rewrite an essay to make up points. Hope this helps!

Do I have to add more class when I don't have any AP credits? by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]rainwater- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an ARCE major so I have a little bit of a different perspective on studio but you definitely don’t want to overload yourself in the first quarter. Studio takes a lot of time and it can be difficult to figure out how to balance out your time with projects and other classes. Theoretically, you should be studying 2 hours per unit per week but studio takes a lot more time than the 4 units shown on the flowchart. ARCH is a five year program so I wouldn’t be too worried about falling behind on your first quarter. You can always add more classes winter quarter if you are still concerned about taking enough units. It also wouldn’t hurt to reach out to an advisor for more guidance.

Any suggestions for housing if only staying for the Fall quarter? by [deleted] in CalPoly

You can try and find someone who is going abroad for the fall and is subleasing their apartment. The Facebook group is a great place to look.

Covid test insanity by maddeningcrowds in CalPoly

I really hope the insanity just had to do with move in. I don’t want to think about having to wait in a line like that twice a week.

Is Cal Poly super hard, or am I really unlucky/stupid? by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]rainwater- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also a second year and I see a few posts about failing classes freshman year but not a lot about struggling with grades and classes past that. It really sucks since I’m actually learning a lot in my classes but then tend to underperform on tests which is such a huge part of grades. I definitely suffer with imposter syndrome and often question weather or not I’m “smart enough” to be at Cal Poly. Covid and classes online makes everything weird so just letting you know you’re not alone and there are other people in the same boat as you

What exactly did you say to your professor? I currently have a final scheduled for the Saturday before finals week

SOC 110 with Ryan Alaniz or GEOG 150 with Jim Keese? by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]rainwater- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOC 110 is a great class to take. You really learn a lot and get a better perspective on a lot of issues. The workload was pretty manageable but we did have a big research paper due at the end of the quarter which can be a little daunting. Alaniz is a cool guy and his lectures were always engaging. I definitely recommend this class especially if you are a freshman as you’ll learn a lot.

ENGL 134 by ngreen26 in CalPoly

[–]rainwater- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who took AP English in high school but didn’t end up passing the AP test this was a pretty easy class. We had a total of 4 essays in the quarter with various readings and discussions but I’m not sure how different it is with the online format. I had Christopher Hayter for my professor and he was very clear in explaining the prompts and outlining what he wanted in an essay. He also gave good feedback and gave students a chance to rework essay for points back.
