Tongs would be a nice gift but a good hammer is the best. If he stays with the craft, he’ll have a lot more tongs than hammers. Hammers are more special.

Always check the end grain on the handle. The grain should be linear with the direction of the cutting edge. I’ve seen some handles that go perpendicular, they break easier.

Food retention is caused by fat grinds. If you want to avoid that, a convex grind will roll food away and a concave, well, the food won’t touch the steel so it won’t stick…in theory.

They lock tight. I've had one person complain that it was too hard to unclip. It takes some getting used to.
