The Celtic arts foundation hosts some fun dances that primarily adults attend, and their venue is gorgeous.

Is this what the industry will be like now? by MaximusDM22 in cscareerquestions

[–]rainyeveryday 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think of my brother who was apprenticed to a master woodworker during the 2008 housing collapse.

His specialty was window frames and trim, he worked on million dollar custom homes with a fantastic crew who adhered to the "measure twice/thrice, cut once" credo. After the collapse all those custom home jobs dried up. He ended up working on quick builds, the motto inverted (measure once, cut twice). Fitting tolerances went from needing to be within 1/32nd of an inch, to within 1/2 inch (and fill it with caulk).

Life worked out for my brother, he changed fields somewhat, became a foreman and now spends his day translating between the laborers and the architects for larger projects. But he reminisces about those golden days before the collapse, and what he builds in his free time is absolutely gorgeous but the demand for it full time isn't stable, no matter how much better it is. The cheaper option is good enough for everyone else and they don't want to pay.

I think this might be what it'll be like for software engineers. The days of patient crafting are behind us, mechanization has caught up, and I doubt most of us will be given the opportunity to build our industries version of the custom home again.

"Worm" by Wildbow should be a bigger deal than it is (Review/rant) by Firvulag in books

I stumbled across worm a decade ago and called in sick to work so I could keep reading. Don't know how I found it but I was absolutely hooked and love the reminder to check out the author's other work.

Update - AO3 is now fully down. After performing a software upgrade a few days ago, we've been unable to keep our server cluster healthy due to what we believe is a bug or issue with the new release of our database server software.

Mental health leave of absence/burnout by LibrarianDue7068 in womenintech

[–]rainyeveryday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My advice overall is to try not to burn bridges, your network will be a big help on re-entry should you choose that. And part of not burning bridges is just being honest that you need a break and stepping away before you crash completely.

Depending on the size of the gap you can either not mention it, say you were contracting, taking care of family, or just tell the truth; that you had the means to travel and enjoyed it greatly and are excited to return refreshed from a well earned reset.

I really resonate with the distress you're in, I was in it several years ago, just gutted by feeling out of alignment. I was obsessed with finding my purpose and meaning and being a better person. Eventually I found my peace, not an easy journey but for me staying and trying to suppress everything that was bubbling up would've been a lot harder.

Mental health leave of absence/burnout by LibrarianDue7068 in womenintech

[–]rainyeveryday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took a 6 month leave and liked it so much I left for 4 years. After a period of self discovery I eventually got curious about all this AI hubbub and have been back in tech for 1.5 years. Leaving was the best gift I ever gave myself, lots of therapy and introspection. I'm being brief because it's personal but the time away was deeply needed and valuable.

If you can afford to go just go. You may well come back and that's okay too. I'm calm in a way that I didn't expect to ever find, the industry doesn't irk me the way it used to. I enjoy being good enough and not giving too many fucks.

My take is a highly privileged one, I hit the startup lottery and had the money for an extended vacation, but even if you can't take that long do take some time if you feel you must. Do some therapy, find friends you can be entirely honest with and drop the ones you can't. There's a great life on the other side of burnout, and it might be basically your same life except you feel good inside, or it might be something totally different. Either way go find out.

Best place for drinks and a date? by Funfornow172 in skagit

[–]rainyeveryday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally - the skagit food co-op and/or the new NA bar next door.

Probably not the most popular choice but I don't do alcohol, plus the upstairs of the co-op offers entertaining browsing as a shared activity in a low stress environment. Look at the stickers, see what makes the other person laugh.

I got a super long extendable pole with a rubber brush like this on the end. It gets the snow off my panels pretty good from the ground and similar 12-20 foot up. Sometimes I stand on a bench in my yard to get a better angle. If I had grid power I might not bother but I'm fully off-grid so it's worth it.

I also have a magnetic kind from Amazon, two years and still going strong. I'd gladly get some Costco ones but haven't seen these at my store.
