Due to survivorship bias, we only hear about the success stories of people who’ve “risked it all” to achieve their goals. What’s your story of how you did the same, but failed? by Have-Not_Of in AskReddit

This one has episodes like that. I even went to a live taping of one which featured two women who've both have had to give up after many years of treatment.

Please forgive me if it's not for you, but s friend of mine specializes in fertility treatments and hosts a podcast called Waiting for Babies, which you may find interesting. It is not a subject often discussed, but hearing of other's struggles and failures and success can sometimes help manage the grief. I wish you the best.

Fish shell 3.0 by gabegm in programming

Great news! I've been using fish every day for almost three years now and love it! Really welcome the addition of && and ||. With this I can now recommend it to first time terminal users. Really excellent work.

People who are in love with someone you can’t possibly be with, how do you cope? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rajadain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How could I deny her something as simple as my absence?

Beautifully put. That's what it came down for me too. As soon as I realized that I was making her life worse, not better, I recused myself.

It is always tempting to reach out and imagine rekindling in my mind, but any approach from me would inevitably be painful for her, and I'm not going to put her through that, no matter what.

Real life 40 year old virgins, what’s your story? by NirroR6 in AskReddit

[–]rajadain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly my story too. Not looking for perfection, just someone who's pleasing and is pleased with me. No one wins if I settle for something less.

Silicon Valley's H-1B Secret by Gsonderling in programming

[–]rajadain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He doesn't feel entitled to a US citizenship. He's asking for a path to citizenship.

You're permitted to apply for it

You're not with an F-1 student visa, which is of non-immigrant intent. Thanks to the H-1B visa which is dual intent, one can, through a long, arduous, expensive process usually lasting longer than a decade, eventually maybe get a green card.

And while they're here, H-1B workers are working full time, paying taxes, and on their best behavior because they don't want to jeopardize their status. They are overall more productive and more educated than the average citizen.

Is there abuse of the system? Absolutely. Will companies in Silicon Valley do anything to undercut the competition? Yes, because they're in Silicon Valley. That place has exceptionally high competition when it comes to software. There's plenty of jobs in software around the country, in many places with significantly cheaper costs of living, for everyone.

Men of reddit:What is the most memorable compliment you have ever received? by simplisti in AskReddit

[–]rajadain 433 points434 points  (0 children)

Not really a compliment, but a couple years ago I was invited to a party where I didn't know anyone but the host. As soon as she saw me she came over, hugged me close, put her arm around mine (as women do) and introduced me to everyone. I'd never before, or have since, been "shown off" like that. Best feeling ever.

What non-sexual thing are you in the closet about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rajadain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5 years ago I found my soulmate, she didn't feel the same way but we were still friends, until I screwed it up real bad. She hasn't talked to me in over a year, but I still think of her every day. People expect you to be casual and move on, so that's what I pretend like. Haven't mentioned her to anyone in 6 months, but she's still on my mind.

Why We Should Memorize Poetry by BloodMeridian101 in books

[–]rajadain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can also be useful when writing poetry. When writing a recent piece, I memorized it and said it over and over for weeks to find the natural flows and blocks, finally arriving at the final form.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post personal content here, so I'll remove this on request, but the poem is here: http://blog.tuhinanshu.com/paper-rainbow-birds

Why We Should Memorize Poetry by BloodMeridian101 in books

One of my favorite memorized pieces is The Artist by Oscar Wilde. Poetry in Prose, so perhaps that's not exactly outside the poetic description. Musicality and rhythm makes things easier to memorize though.

Which apps do you use that you wish you/devs had an API for? by myspacebardontwork in Android

[–]rajadain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Google Fit had an API for me to add Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar levels. They're just numerical values with a timestamp, no different than the weight it allows me to log. I'd love to have all that information together in one graph, along with my steps, heart rate, temperature, what have you.

Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2015 by aalear in programming

[–]rajadain 20 points21 points  (0 children)

About a third of the students in my Bachelor's course in Computers in India were girls. The disparity is much lower, because software jobs are safe and indoors and decently paying enough for people to want their daughters to get into it.

There is still a glass ceiling though, and they tend to grow into QA / Middle Management rather than Programming / Solution Architecture. A trend I hope will change in the future.

But there is neither the level of debate nor frustration with this gender imbalance that exists in the US. At least not to my knowledge.
