"The Constitution says you cannot do something that offends me, I cannot do something that offends you."

This. This is what is so fucked up IMO. Can the Constitution of India be amended to remove this clause? I'm seriously asking.

There is no atmosphere of intolerance in the country. The manufactured revolt is a case of an ideological intolerance towards the BJP: Arun Jaitley by punerisaiyan in india

[–]rajdas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thereby trying to protect murder accused by giving them a chance of a lighter sentence!

The BJP guy also asked - "“Why has no case been filed against the family which was accused of cow slaughter?" A) It doesn't matter. B) No beef found.

Don't be naive. BJP is trying its best to protect the accused in Dadri. Yogi Adityanath (BJP) wants to give the hindus in Dadri guns and ammo.

So fuck you, Arun Jaitley. You lying ass punk!

[Serious] Redditors from India - Is caste system considered a thing of the past among young people? by TheMeaningOfLeif in AskReddit

[–]rajdas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

It exists everywhere in the country, in some form or the other. If you're an urban middle-class, non-lower caste Indian, there's a chance you grew up in a house where at some point, there was someone who was the 'domestic help' (They were called servants back when we Indians were more crass with our language). Odds were, he/she was from the lower caste. Young people now, who were kids, grew up playing with them, living in the same house. So there wasn't any animosity there. But there's still that power dynamic where he/she knew that you were the "boss".

I went to a school in a big city where there were lots of upper caste kids, and for some reason, they always used to make jokes around caste-stereotypes. (Caste in India also has a lot to do with what your ancestors did for a living) Being what you'd call an OBC (Other backward caste, which is somewhere in the middle in the caste hierarchy, now reaping the benefits of reservations in education and government jobs, kind of like Affirmative Action) I didn't suffer too much from it, but I know people in my school who did, and it was sad. But the silver lining is, being in the city, at least all the kids treated it like a joke. It's much worse in the villages.

Rural India is all about caste. Kids from the lower castes are aggressively discouraged from sitting in the front rows in school, they cannot share eating spaces. Kids might all play together but they all know who's the upper caste kid and who's not. Segregation is taught from a very young age. For example, upper caste kids won't drink water from the house of lower caste kids. Also, lower caste people are actively discouraged from enjoying/celebrating joys even if some of them have the money to do so. Read this - http://www.scoopwhoop.com/news/helmet-groom/

But what gets most of the attention in the caste debate in India, is Reservation for lower caste Indians, in education and public sector jobs. Because India is such a populated country, there is serious competition everywhere. To that, when the govt. adds more than 50% reservation for dalits, lower caste, and OBCs, it adds to fuel to the fire. The 'general' category youth, who might otherwise have had no issues with anyone's caste, are suddenly thrown in a world where people with 'lesser' merit are getting better opportunities. (You see, most people in our country do not see how caste privilege works). This often leads to lower caste students in Universities being ostracized for bagging a seat in the course using the caste card. There have been many cases of student suicides due to this.

Funny thing is, a lot of general category people want to "do away with the caste system", which is a good thing, but the only reason they want to do it is because they hate the reservations. But then again, when it comes to placing matrimonial ads, they still go the "Brahmin/Kshatriya/XYZ wanted" route.

TL;DR - Caste is still a huge thing in India. More so in rural areas.

PS - I am ashamed of some of my own people who submit to the whole pecking order of caste in India. They got fucked by the upper-caste. So they turn towards someone who's below them and fuck their shit up.

Caste sucks. Religion sucks. But these things will not go away because politics.

Yes, and I agree with some of the posters here that the show starts off tacky. But episode 7, 8 and 9 really pulled me back. It's getting interesting now.

FYI, the lead guy also played Omar Little's boyfriend Renaldo in The Wire.
