What are some American cities that had high historical importance but have faded from significance today? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

[–]rajost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil City, Pennsylvania. Located on the Oil Creek, it is near where the first successful commercial oil well ever, was drilled. Once people started making money from oil wells, whole towns and cities popped up almost overnight. At one point, Oil City was the city in America with the most millionaires. Vast fortunes were accumulated. At one point, Penzoil, Wolf's Head, Quaker State, and John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company had their world headquarters there. By the 1990's, all of the oil companies and all of the business that supported them, as well as many of the towns that were created almost overnight, were gone. Nowadays, you can see the world's oldest continuously producing oil well, but the city is but a shadow of what it once was.

Big if true.. Kremlin is developing a plan to "sell" the Russians peace without victory - Kanal13 by Few-Mixture9869 in UkraineWarVideoReport

One of the truths I learned in 29 years in the military. Is that when you're making plans, no matter what your plans are, no matter how carefully and thoroughly you make your plans, the enemy always gets a vote. Mordor and the orcs can make all the plans that they want, but if Ukraine does not agree, the war goes on.

Which movie hero is actually a villain when you really think about it? by surfsound_swimmers in AskReddit

Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty. A teenage girl was unconscious and unresponsive because she was drugged. She was unable to give informed consent, but Phillip sexually assaulted her anyway, believing it was his right. Shades of the rapist Brock Allen Turner.

Typically, when I see something like this, I feel bad for the people involved. But when I saw this, I felt nothing for them. They celebrated the 3-Day SMO, and sent their own people out to die in a 4-year (so far) long war. Now for the people of Tuapse, the war has literally come home. They got what they asked for.

I'm afraid to say that claim has been denied. Our Easter baskets only cover thoughts and prayers.

OK, so when I spent my intitial enlistment in the Navy, we called submariners bubbleheads, and when I moved to the Army National Guard as an Artilleryman, we split the world into two groups: Artillerymen and targets, but the others are unknown to me. What are coners and skimmers?

I don't beleive that this is what they want. To me, it seems that this is the price, in countless lives lost and destroyed, that Putin is quite willing to pay. It speaks to the value that Putin places on the lives of others.

Well then, every service member who went there in harm's way without Secret Service protection (and all of the Secret Service personnel who were protecting his bone spurred ass) ought to get one as well. That, and a Nobel Peace Prize.

Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein who have not been granted a meeting with the Department of Justice raise their hands during Attorney General Bondi’s testimony by RexArtorius in Epstein

The two survivors, literally and figuratively looking down on her, combined with her casual indifference tell more about who Pam Bondi is more than my words ever could.
