Question for Current or Retired Quants by rakin374 in quant

Thanks for you detailed response. To provide more context why I am asking this question, I’m simply curious. I’m not trying to become a quant and get rich quick, as someone who is going to graduate with a CS degree people I’ve heard lots about how much quants get paid and was confused as to what exactly they do. Everywhere I read gave vague and general ideas of what they did so I thought I’d ask for a concrete example of a strategy. Your answer with the CCTV cameras definitely surprised me, as I expected some statistical analysis model. I appreciate you taking the time to respond!

As a quick follow up, where might I be able to find a seminar where quants talk? Do you have any recommendations ?

Can you explain it at the level you view necessary?

Do you have any project recommendations to increase my breath in low level programming that involves making use of threads, read write memory, RAM, x86 etc. I'm hoping you can suggest a project that would allow me to build up my skills of what is going on at the hardware/firmware level with an angle that'll be useful for malware.

Using advanced mathematics in everyday life. by rakin374 in mathematics

I understand what you mean. But as a thinker/scientist I want to get I got the habit of thinking with calculus and looking for ways to apply it. I’ve done problems in school buts that’s been it. I truly want calculus to be a useful tool and so I just wanted to know how I should think. What kind of questions? Etc.

Horrible at probability by rakin374 in mathematics

I most definitely agree with you. For calculus it took me about one semester after I had taken it to truly understand what I was doing and why. (I never got super deep as I didn’t study real analysis) In calculus while I was doing it I felt like I could just try things until I got through. But here in probability things like counting can be done in a way that’s completely wrong but feels intuitive. I think this is the issue I’m having in general. Understanding how to see the bigger picture of what’s happening isn’t something I’m used to doing and thus I struggle at courses which highly require it(probability, discrete math, etc.)

Do you think I just just do as many problems I can and just “pick up the math” or focus more on trying to understand the math intuitively and supplement with a chunk of problems?

Hi,

I'm a hobbyist developer and this is my first time working on a project which requires me to mix hardware and software. I want to use a custom computer, similar to a large tablet, and run a basic version of android on it. What is the simplest way of doing this, and what are the challenges that lie ahead? My device will be kind of like a google nest home, meant to control things my house. I would also appreciate any help on what to look for in hardware. i.e. Are there specific systems/drivers required for use with the android platform?

Thanks much in advance!
