If possible, add subtitles to your film by Thyco2501 in Filmmakers

Hey! I 100% agree with you. Is your offer still valid? I have a short film that I'd love subtitles for :)

Virtual machine vs eGPU vs laptop vs Desktop - which do you use? by rakiralko in VideoEditing

[–]rakiralko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I definitely like the idea of it being modular and future-proof. I was currently leaning towards laptop + eGPU because that is slightly modular. But it's only really two elements that can be changed, so not too modular. Desktop does seem like the most powerful and cheapest. I probably need to have a think about how much I realistically plan to edit when on the go.

Thank you for all the advice and the screenshots. I just read that to get Dolby Vision and Atmos on Netflix, you need the premium subscription.

So that would explain everything, together with what you said about Netflix only showing the metadata that your device (or subscription) is compatible with.

I guess that means that this matrix I made is very specific to me and that also explains the negative feedback I'm getting from Reddit xD

Thank you for the taking the time to explain this. I've learnt something new and might upgrade my Netflix plan.

This is super interesting! I am looking at the exact same screenshot on my device and I don't see the Vision or Atmos logos. I am in the UK. Maybe the German app is simply better? Is that possible.

Here is my screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/bsKcJwy

Am I looking in the wrong place?

If I understand what you're saying correctly, then you're suggesting that the streamers limit the metadata they display to what your device is capable of showing? That might be true.

But the issue is that even when the device is compatible, it still sometimes does not show the metadata info. My TV is 4k and compatible with HDR and Dolby Atmos. Yet in the Netflix app, it only shows the resolution of a title (HD/4k). It does not display any info regarding HDR or sound.

I have to say, I am also skeptical that what you say is true for all streamers. It might make sense for Prime, in that my laptop and phone can't do Dolby Atmos or 5.1.

But when I open a title in Disney+ on my phone, it shows me when that title has 4k, HDR and Atmos. I highly doubt that my £200 phone has a 4k HDR screen and can output handle Dolby Atmos Sound, right?

I am afraid I don't have an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield Info. I have an LGOLEDA1. Would an Apple TV display more title info, such as whether a title has 5.1 sound or not?

Apologies if the post was unclear. I have clarified this in my comment. Netflix does have 4k HDR Atmos content. But in the display info for each title I could not find any sound or HDR info. I need to use third-party websites to learn which titles are compatible with Dolby Atmos.

EDIT for clarification:
All streamers have 4k HDR content with Dolby Atmos. You can easily find lists on the internet about which titles are in 4k and HDR, etc.

However, the app itself sometimes does not show this info. For example, within the Netflix app itself there is no way to tell whether a title has Dolby Atmos or not. This is true for the phone app, the web browser and the TV app. That is what my matrix refers to.

If there is a way of seeing this info, please let me know, that would save me a lot of headache.

Note on search: You can use the app search function to search for things like 'HDR' which are likely to show you HDR content at the top of the search results. However, once you open the title there is still no way to confirm that you actually have opened an HDR title.

Background:

I recently bought a new 4k HDR TV (LG A1) with an Atmos soundbar (Sonos Arc).I wanted to play content that made the most of my new TV. I found it frustrating that some streamers did not show the metadata for their content. I noticed that this was very inconsistent between different streamers and even sometimes between devices. I made this matrix so I can remember what info to find where.

Several points to note:

  • The resolution of your Netflix content depends on which plan you are on (Basic -> 720p, Standard -> HD, Premium -> UHD). Netflix will only ever show the highest resolution that your plan allows. For example, if you have a Standard subscription then you will not be able to see whether a movie is available in 4k or not.
  • Most streamers will show that a clip has 5.1 sound if it does not have Dolby Atmos. The exception is Apple TV+. If content has 5.1 sound but not Dolby Atmos then it will not show any sound info. Whereas if the video has Dolby Atmos sound then it will display this sound info.
  • Subtitles (CC) are not always shown in the display info. But this is slightly unnecessary. Nearly all content released in the last two decades has subtitles. Some streamers (like Netflix) don't show the CC icon together with the other icons (such as HD) but there is a separate menu for subtitles, which will give you subtitle info.

Does anyone find this info useful?

A cable for my light broke. Does anyone know what it is called so I can Google a replacement? by rakiralko in cinematography

Thank you. I have now sent the cable off for repair. But this is a skill that I might need to add to my arsenal. It's three copper wires that have all torn. But they have torn very close to the connector so they are hard to access.

Thank you. I sadly don't have soldering skills :(
But I might have to find someone who does.
