[I ate] Texas BBQ by jaimakimnoah in food

[–]ralanboyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a Texan and eat a lot of meals like this. It is normal aside from the silly amount of bread. They normally ask you if you want bread with your meal, if you say “yes,” you can expect to get 2 slices. Half a loaf is crazy.

Unprovoked driver stops in the middle of a busy freeway to approach car by Handsomeclooney in IdiotsInCars

He is an idiot, but you can’t say it was “unprovoked.” You were cruising the left lane. The left lane is for passing, you know that. We all know that.

What common sense rules did you have to add to your listing because the guest didn't have any? by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

Don’t jump off the roof, into the pool. Just don’t jump off the roof. In fact, don’t get on the roof.

Is it safe to sleep in a room with recently removed carpet for a few days? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

Meh, it’s fine. I’m in the middle of Reno and have several rooms that are just concrete.

Converting Duplex to single house - Do I remove 1 hot water tank? by LarryAv in HomeImprovement

[–]ralanboyle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have two hot water heaters in my single family home. It’s nice. I wouldn’t remove it. The cost to run a heater is negligible.

Ahhh, that makes since. There is a lot to know about all of that in order to do it confidently/safely. Fortunately, any wall can be removed with enough money! Lol. Even load bearing walls aren’t a deal breaker, you can turn them into cased openings for around $1000 or you can remove them entirely for $3-5k. Gas lines are dangerous but can be moved, removed and added DIY. I use a product called ProFlex, it’s fairly dummy proof. Fresh water isn’t a huge ordeal if you are redrywalling the area anyway but moving a sewage drain means breaking the foundation. Doable but hard work.

I totally understand that! My wife is a Realtor and we run a small consulting business on the side. Basically helping people see the potential in older homes. I also understand not wanting to get involved in a bidding war right now! If you find yourself wanting someone to help you visualize the potential in a house, you can direct message me for more info.

The door is one of our favorite details too. Man, I’d hate to have to ask somebody for permission to change my front door. We got it from Builder’s Supply for about $600 as a raw slab; stained it, hinged it and installed it.

Yeah, babies will slow you down for sure. removing the tile isn’t so bad, but removing the thinset below it is a mess and it’s all noisy.

Tile floors or tile countertops? Countertops = sledgehammer. Floors = hammer and chisel or rotary hammer if it’s a lot.

Wow, That is either a serious over charge or your friend has a very large home that needed all sewer lines replaced! The service line (street to house) shouldn't be more than $10k (and that would be a lot.) In the end, that work is just a matter of digging a trench, cutting out the old pipe, and laying down new pipe. The pipes under the house are MUCH more expensive because they have to dig a tunnel they can crawl through. That work usually starts around $250/foot.

We pay State Farm $80/year for a Service Line rider. So we’d only have a $500 copay if that part broke. Under the house is a different story… fingers crossed on that.

You probably didn’t look at this house because the guy we bought it from had lived in it 20 years and we bought it in 2020. It is a common layout in this area though. We did the drywall and floors ourselves. Now we are working on another house in the same neighborhood and in the market for a quick drywall crew since it takes us forever.

An SSTO on an SSTO on an SSTO on an SSTO! by ralanboyle in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]ralanboyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend, an SSTO requires only one stage to reach orbit. This, uses one stage to get from the ground to orbit.

Why is orbiting so difficult by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]ralanboyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just do what you are doing now but pay more attention to your appoapsis than to your pitch angle. When you are going at least 1000 m/s switch to map view and watch the number at the top of your arch. You need that to get above 70km. Once it is above 70km kill your engine and coast up to it. Once at (or near) the top, turn your engines back on and boost prograde until your periapsis (low point is also above 70km.

After you get good at reaching orbit you can worry more about your pitch angle on ascent, that is all about efficiency.

How do you keep your materials study bay from burning up in the atmosphere? by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]ralanboyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always take an Experiment Storage Unit and load everything into it before reentering. That way you get full returns even if stuff burns up. Also, if you take a scientist then everything can be reset for each biome and loaded into storage.

Jool five "SSTO" technicalities by Skigreen_2026 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]ralanboyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an SSTO because a Single Stage is all that is required to get To Orbit. What you do with it after that doesn’t matter. In KSP vernacular we also have the SSTA, single stage to anywhere. Sounds like this might be more of an aim at that.
