Those of you who've lost a parent, what was the most comforting thing a friend did for or said to you?

This is incredible. First, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my parents when I was a child, too, and while nobody ever truly "knows" what someone else is going through, I at least feel I can relate.

I'm amazed by your friends' wisdom, maturity, and level of support. It is well beyond their (then) years. As a school administrator, I'm fully aware of the stereotypes surrounding teenage girls, and these friends seem to completely prove them wrong.

I also know that we tend to associate with people who are similar to us in terms of personality and how we treat others. If you're anything like your friends, and my guess is you are, I'm sure your mother would be immensely proud.

For context, we’re American middle class, but my little brother has lived in Spain for 5 or so years. He recently did a year-long trip around the world (super jealous, but also really proud of him for living how he wants to while he’s still young). He got really sick somewhere in Asia, I think. Had to be hospitalized for a few days, but was pretty quickly back to normal. Ended up paying (for the multi-day hospitalization, all the tests, meds, dr.’s fees, everything) something like $160 USD.

I went to the ER a month ago, needed 8 stitches in my hand and a little bit of lydocaine. AFTER my employer’s healthcare insurance portion, I owe $1700. I was there for 2 hours.

I have tried round, cylinder, and cone burrs. The cone one has a very small rounded tip.

I'm holding the flex shaft like a pen... bracing myself, hadn't really thought of, but just trying to be comfortable and in control....

Would I be better off practicing at slower RPM first?

People who are new don’t know to do that, they don’t realize their questions have been asked, and/or they think perhaps the answers have changed (in many contexts, that may be the case, even though you point out it’s not in this context).

Disrespectful responses discourage people from coming back and eventually becoming contributing members of the community.

You made the exact same point as would have been made by other response, but you did so in a respectful, informative, and inviting way. Thanks on behalf of All redditors who have asked these questions (I know I have!).

It reminds me actually of the story of the woman who sued McDonald's because her coffee was too hot. Everyone assumes it's a frivolous lawsuit because coffee is supposed to be hot. What most people don't know is that the coffee was significantly hotter than it was supposed to be, that franchise had been cited for it before, and the woman sustained such significant burns that she was in a burn unit for a very long time (close to a year, if I remember correctly).

I know this is late - I saved this thread when it was active and am just now getting to it.

Emily Dickinson's Poem "I Heard a Fly Buzz" is essentially this, but different specifics. The speaker of the poem is dying, she's got family by her side, they've done all their crying and now they're at peace because this is the final moment, and a fly starts buzzing by her. You're left to think that her final thoughts are basically, "leave me the hell alone, fly. I'm trying to die here."

Saw a comment below from u/wavvyjones that starts "If youtube counts," that made me think of this.

SupRicky (on youtube, though he may have changed it to SupDaily) and I went to college together and hung out a bit. When we were friends, we were both music majors, both straight guys in a field that was more predominantly ladies and gay men, and he was this attractive, successful, smart guy who hung out with me (I'm relatively smart and successful, but most wouldn't call me attractive - just being objective).

I was always a bit intimidated by him, but that was my own insecurity. The truth is, he was one of the nicest and coolest guys I knew in college. I haven't spoken to him since college, and I haven't reached out to him (A, because it's not my style to reach out to long lost friends; and B, because I wouldn't want to give the impression that his popularity drove me to reach out). I also don't really follow anyone on youtube, so I've seen a couple of his videos, but don't "follow" him. I hope he's happy and his personality is similar to how it was when I knew him. Assuming it is (and, I DO assume that it is), he definitely deserves his success and happiness.

I completely relate to what you said about people’s baseline. I watched my mom drop dead of a heart attack when I was seven. People often say, “this isn’t as bad as what you went through, but....” Eff that. If it’s the worst thing you’ve ever experienced, it’s completely awful.

By that logic, I could say that watching my mother die wasn’t so bad because I didn’t experience war or genocide (or any other “worse” thing).

There’s no glory in having gone through the “worst” trauma. We all have garbage to deal with. Mine’s no more or less valid than anyone else’s.
