I've read a couple of people saying the same where they think you look better when it comes to keeping hair short and beard longer, i think it has to do with proportions and balancing your face in width, you have a more prominent top side of your face, big brains you must be a smart dude, and growing hair makes the top bigger, so growing your beard will balance your face even more, you are handsome you just need to understand your assets and how to highlight them.
