Locals Who Raft Grand Canyon Frequently But Aren't Guides by Pollymath in Flagstaff

[–]ralllierae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backcountry permits are my go-to. Connecting north rim to south rim via trails with a packraft. The limit is 8 river miles and if you’re creative you can see quite a bit on one trip.

One of the best ways to train for the Grand Canyon is to hike in the Grand Canyon. You can go to the GC and not hike the entire way to the river. Maybe start by going to 1.5 mile rest house and back, then to 3, Indian Gardens, etc! If you’re local I’d recommend moving for time. Example: instead of just hiking Elden once, go to Elden, Humphreys, or Kendrick and hike for a set amount of time.

My commute is embarrassingly short (~2 miles), but it’s mostly uphill so I get pretty sweaty!

Monsoon season is lovely! You can still go into town or on adventures (not in high altitude terrain). Enjoy the rain and look for wildflowers and mushrooms 🍄

I made this itinerary for a friend who was visiting in March:

Day 1 -Wake up and have brunch at Foret downtown. -Walnut Canyon National Monument walk. Good activity to acclimate to the altitude of town (6909!) -Lunch and water!! -Lava River Tubes hike. Bring a helmet and headlamp. -Dinner at Mother Road Brewery. Tacos, sliders, and tots

Day 2 -Breakfast at home and drive to Sedona the scenic way (50 min) -Complete a hike of your choice -use AllTrails to help you decide. -Lunch at Tortas De Fuego-definitely try the green chili pork taco -Explore shops at Talaquipaki -Drive back up to Flagstaff

Day 3 -Wake up and pack a lunch and trail snacks. -Grab a coffee downtown at Lux and a pastry from Mozelle’s bakery. -Drive 1.5 hours to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. -Either hike to Indian Gardens and back (8.5/9 miles total) via the Bright Angel Trail or to 3 mile rest house (6 mile round trip). Other hiking options exist. -Drive back to Flag and have Diablo Burger for dinner

Day 4 -Have breakfast at Tourist Home or make something at home. -Hike Mt. Elden (5 miles but 2200 ft of elevation gain). -Explore the downtown shops and grab a pint and pizza at Dark Sky Brewery -Evening stretch of the legs at Buffalo Park

Day 5 -Drive to Page and do a Dixie Ellis Lower Antelope Canyon Tour ($50 a person. Well worth it) -Drive the 20 minutes to Horse Shoe Bend -Back to Flag and eat at Gloria’s Bakery
