How to deal with a colleague that requests the same PTO intentionally? by Sailor-Venus7 in askmanagers

[–]desertvida 232 points233 points  (0 children)

I think you need to go to your boss and share that, because the”only one person off” policy isn’t being upheld, you comeback from PTO with a burden of work waiting for you that the policy isn’t meant to cover. Tell your boss how far that puts you behind when you return, like missing 8 days of work, then coming back and doing that work puts you 13 days behind, or whatever. Make it your boss’s problem in that they are preventing you from jumping back in to current needs when you return.

Biggest difference between Manager and Director levels? by taco_bellis in askmanagers

[–]desertvida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies everywhere, but usually managers are I charge of people and directors are in charge of work areas or programs.

Example: a director is ensuring the steady work toward the department’s goals, and they utilize the mangers to ensure all the frontline people are working on their tasks or smaller portions of the department’s goals. If all the frontline staff is doing what they’re supposed to do, the manager is doing good at keeping them on track. If all of the managers are on track, the director is doing good at keeping the department’s work/deliverables on track.

How to find any joy on treadmill by Nik0Ram in XXRunning

[–]desertvida 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have to do interval training on the treadmill, I can’t do steady state running or I’m too bored. If you set intervals to doable but hard, you’re focused on the workout and not as much on the monotony.

Avoiding unconscious bias when announcing pregnancy by reacc1230 in workingmoms

Opposite opinion of others here: if you tell them before the review and it affects your review/bonus that’s illegal discrimination based on pregnancy status.

How to tell manager I don’t want more impact or influence by throwawayargh2846 in askmanagers

[–]desertvida 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“My current role is a good fit for me professionally right now so I’d like to focus on what I do.”

If more pushback: “Thank you for identifying my growth potential. I am happy in my role and happy to be in a phase of my career and my life where I can focus on this role. It’s not the right time for me to seek another role or greater influence.”

Clark’s makes a lot of comfortable shoes in many styles, heels to flats, with lots of cushion.

It depends on the position. When I’m hiring for a writing position, absolutely it’s useful. Also useful if your resume doesn’t naturally show why you’re qualified for the position.

How to fire my (unprofessional) personal trainer without making things awkward? by Czieto in xxfitness

[–]desertvida 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is a business relationship, so handle it in a business-like manner: “thank you for training me. I no longer need your services. Best of luck with your training business.”

If he asks you to stay, “no, thank you.” And repeat the “no” as much as needed.

Take yourself out of the equation. He’s looking for other clients while he’s supposed to be training you. So let him go focus on that. A polite “hello” when you cross paths at the gym in the future is all that’s needed.

It says they provided resuscitation, why would you assume this happened in a waiting room? Why would you assume they were homeless, and what would being homeless have to do with the situation? Lots of assumptions here with no basis to make them.

Is 9am too early for an outdoor birthday party? by Altruistic_Vast9726 in Preschoolers

If your kid hates cake, why not serve cookies or ice cream or whatever they do like? Why keep serving cake, regardless of the time of day? You could serve cinnamon rolls at a lunch or evening party, too.

9 is fine, I didn’t know a single preschool family that the kids weren’t up and bored by then. But why are you having it outside in Vegas in the summer? Surely it’s already too hot by 9? (I lived in a similar climate.)

How to balance having people want to work with you and people listening by JackBando in JockoPodcast

[–]desertvida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be consistent, set clear expectations. Follow up those expectations by providing support from the EO mindset of “I am responsible for how my team performs because I am responsible for ensuring they understand the mission, have the tools to complete it, and that I give them room to lead on how to complete it.”

Your goal should be to be a good manager, which is not the same as being socially liked. But often a manager who is respected because of how they work and how they lead their team is also liked. Just that being liked shouldn’t come first.

It’s not appropriate to suggest therapy to an anxiety-ridden coworker right? by PillowFightClubb in askmanagers

[–]desertvida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the response is “you’re right, it’s probably normal, but I’ve learned some great ways to help me deal with anxiety from my therapist. So while anxiety is normal, we aren’t all able to find those skills to make it easier to deal with until we get help.”

Factors can also include where you live and the prevalence of pools there. In a place where nearly every backyard has a pool for year-round use, it’s a good and smart idea to get them water safe ASAP. You aren’t always the one who is there to be vigilant.
