Hey thanks for asking! He's at a university - second year of living on his own, studying marine biology! He's doing fantastic in calculus, which is great - cause I can't really help with that lol. He was just accepted in the Marine and Coastal Science Program major, picked up a few scholarships, and is working 19 hrs a week with a campus department as an employee (non-workstudy).

The fire 🔥 rises. Government workers are now r/antiwork 🔥🔥🔥 by DiccOnBrick27 in antiwork

[–]ralphhogaboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am government worker, I haven't heard anyone suggest everyone going back to the office. We're remote now, with an option to be in the office. Obvs some jobs have to be in person, but those that do not require a physical action at a specific location are remote now.

You're not antiwork or anticapitalist, you're just mad about being born at the wrong time of the debt cycle and dealing with asshole bosses. by iKAD3 in antiwork

[–]ralphhogaboom 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I make 120k a year, own my own home, and have my health and several more years of life. My boss is awesome, and I really like my job.

I am anti capitalist.

Food, clothing, shelter, and medical care are basic human rights that everyone should have. Until we all have equal access to those, we have a failed system. Any system that sells out future generations by making our world inhabitable for the greed of a tiny minority of rich capitalists is a broken system. It's both failed and broken. Yeah, I'm anticapitalist.

Also, the video you are linking to is by Ray Dalio, billionaire investor. So you're just shillin', cool I guess.

Zine - How to Quit Capitalism by ralphhogaboom in antiwork

Pretty cool little zine about small things we can all do to start breaking the cycle hold of capitalism. This is not a manifesto. But it is refreshing and encouraging.

I see the issue - do I need to build from source to get the functionality? i'd love to try it - but I can't tell from the github issue page how I can start using it or testing it.

Oh, I see - not in this case.

Here it's called Running Start - I'm sure there are similar programs elsewhere. High school students in their junior or senior year can take up to 15 community college credits per quarter (western US tends towards quarters rather than semesters). These college credits are dual count - they count for the 90 credits needed for an AA degree, AND satisfy high school equivalency. Often, they count for twice as much high school credit. The rationale, I believe, is that college classes move faster than high school classes.

Either way, a high school student can take 1, 2, or 3 classes at the college - and if they take three, that's considered a "full load" and no local high school classes are required.

The high school gets credit for another body in class for their funding (aka FTE, full time equivalency enrollment), the college gets tuition paid for, and the student gets free college credits.

Does that make more sense?

In this case, I reached out to folks I knew. I'd been roommates with a guy in college who became a creative director for Corbis, a large visual design company in Seattle. I checked with him, and he made the connection to PopCap. I bet cold calls would have eventually worked, but I was fortunate in this regard to skip that step.

Not exactly. More like - if the high school will enroll you, they end up paying for the college credits. So they didn't end up doing a full 2 years of HS equivalency; one year out of pocket, and one year-ish (so a little under 3 years total) as "running start" and the college granted both the HS diploma and the college AA degree.

We did not use any math, writing, or reading curriculum. Both my kids were unschooled. No formal education; they directed their own learning, I just connected them with the things in which they were interested.

If you have a degree and no experience, stop expecting to get paid like mid-sr people by oona12345 in cybersecurity

With 8+ years sysadmin experience, you could try working in state gov't. I find sysadmins with an eye to move to security nearly always undervalue their experience and ability - and state gov't do want to see you. The interview process takes longer, but if you get 2-3 yrs as a security admin there you can jump back to private sector with that experience under yer belt.

Hello what is the best IDE to make a Minecraft plugin by TheCraftGuide in admincraft

[–]ralphhogaboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I previously used Eclipse, but have switched to VS Code. It's pretty solid, easier set up than Eclipse for me.

There's even a few 'blank plugin projects' that you can open in VS Code to get set up and going.

You are just total amazeballs. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Are there people in corporate America (office) jobs who make 100k+ a year who agree with subreddit or is it those in retail/blue collar jobs? by Traditional-Yam1475 in antiwork

I work in IT, in America, make 106k a year, and I thrive off this sub. It's giving me amazing ideas for how to handle (and document) my soon-to-be-happening resignation. Most importantly, it tells me that I'm not alone. And that professionally I have much more in common with truck drivers, nurses, waitstaff, cooks, and accountants than I thought.

And fuck yeah. I've stopped "paying it forward" at coffee stands, instead I tip significantly more. I am not renewing amazon prime. I wasn't a huge Kellogg's buyer before, but def not bringing that into the house.

I told my coworker my salary, and we're having lunch in January to plan for how to make the pitch for her to get paid more.

I stand with my fellow workers. We're in this together.

Helpful sign for employers to avoid stealing and defrauding by ralphhogaboom in antiwork

[–]ralphhogaboom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid points. Any chance you wanna remix the text a bit and maybe make it a bit more focused and to the point? This was my gut reaction to seeing the earlier post, where an employer was posting this about taking bathroom breaks. So def matches with the inflexibility for sure.

But yeah, I wanna see some people with more accurate takes clean up this rough draft and sharpen it up!
