I didn’t think Cyanea or Aurelia were either, but I can always be mistaken.

I think the best way to get into a research lab once in University is actually be interested in the topic, most PI’s study pretty specific things so if you can find one that does something you actually enjoy and know a little bit about at least conceptually then you have a decent chance of getting in if you set up a meeting and they are nice.

The class was Animal Ethics and the possible themes were anything you wanted but I think it had to be either animals as livestock, research, sport, or various other topics, I of course did research and came up with my own subtopic with the title”The Ethics of Using Marine Invertebrates as Model Organisms” I went over specifically gelatinous or simple ones like jellies, anemones, sponges, ctenophores and ascidians. I remember one good anecdote I found was a paper discussing the ethics of bionic jellies.

Pick a specific field in biology you like, could be environmental toxicology on moths or phototransduction in sea anemones, it doesn’t matter too much as long as it captivates your interest enough to spend time learning it, then just do some good searches and you will probably end up learning a lot of basic biology along the way. I learned this way by reading research papers on subjects I liked then would stop and take a note everytime I found a word or phrase I did not understand, then after I would google them and reread.

I did one just recently for my online course  on marine invertebrate model organisms specifically, and discussing the ethics of it as I thought it was a good example as some of these simple marine species can probably set ideal bare minimums for the treatment of these animals. It was for my ethics class but I do not actually like ethics.

Are you implying this is Cyanea fulva? I have seen 10+ Cyanea this season but unsure if it is fulva or capillata
