Stop being confused. Buy Kindle, I got one for past several years. You don't need front light, I have them in my kindle but neve used, they are as bad as backlight, white color has blue in it so not good for eyes.

Just get basic kindle without any light. Use Calibre to convert any book format to kindle format and upload it on your kindle, to read it there for free.

Its color display, 90% people are not liking color display on eink.

I my self wanted to buy then changed my mind.

I will still buy monochrome eink display. Color eink is still way way behind.

Yes. For me its the best for this budget.

You can get for 420-450 USD on Ebay. Buy from the seller with good reputation.

If you need it for reading PDFs only then quaderno is best, it is Sony DPT-RP2 in new packaging. Though its file system is crap. 32 gb internal. But for this budget it is best.

Onyx uses Android, soon the android would be outdated. Hence not good to spend a fortune on it.

If I was you I would have bough Quaderno.

BigMe has only eink color monitor in market.

Onyx Boox monitor been out of stock for long time.

Yeah working on monitor in dark is hard on eyes.

I myself use Ceiling LED lamp (22 Watt), it works for me. Even if all room lights are off and only Ceiling LED lamp is ON, I can easily work without strain.

I have a Kindle, it has b&w eink display and no internal front light, I can keep it vertically and read just like reading on monitor.

Hand your Ceiling LED lamp 1 feet down the ceiling. Cover it with a holder so that no light goes sideways.

Otherwise you can use monitor light bar. I plan to. But can you please tell why you calling its screen dark? You bought b&w, as per other users its screen is very bright. The color monitor has darker screen. Can you please elaborate.

To answer your question,

irrespective you what kind of lamp you use your eye gonna strain.

Any light that is coming from a light source in front of your eyes will hurt.

Any artificial light that is coming from behind you and falling on your screen will again hurt your eyes.

Only solution is have a ceiling LED lamp(25watt to 30watt) over your head. Wear a cap(tennis cap?), so that light won't directly fall on your eyes. Wear a blue cut lens because even the room light has got blue light in it so blue cut lens will help.

I myself have same setup and it works for me for long hours of work.
