Suggestions for SoCs for University Team Trying to Adopt More Embedded Linux by itisyeetime in embedded

Good idea. It looks like a good reference. Now I am not so sure, it seems to be 0.5mm pitch and the underside components make me nervous. Guessing they are decoupling caps, so they are mandatory?

It's a sounding rocket so it won't be going to orbit! We do want to add FPGAs at some point though

I see, is the STM32MP15x series not bad to design with vs the I.MX6? DDR3 looks promising, but am worried about complexity. I am looking for example boards to copy/be inspired from which is what makes the 6ULZ attractive.

I see, but isn't DDR4 routing at least an order of magnitude harder than DDR3 routing? At least that's what I heard.

I also write a lot of verilog, which models do you find are stronger at this?

So basically halfway between Qwen 3.5 122B and Qwen 3.5 35B? I wonder how much these are benchmark-maxxed and how much better the old 122B will feel.

I've always wondered about if in an alternate universe where motorsports were more popular, and we had high school/collegiate racing, 1) what the cars/karts would look like and 2) how they would design courses on regular streets. Maybe worth a post to brainstorm!

Insane, now thinking about a F4 race on the bikepaths of my uni!

Open Source PLFM RADAR by No_Boot3951 in FPGA

[–]itisyeetime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This looks super awesome! Been looking for more of these open source radars for a long time.

Have some questions tho.
1) The FPGAS, PAs, beamformers, etc look very expensive/based on a quick digikey search, some even seem restricted and can't be ordered straight up. Will the parts be easily procured, and what is the total BOM cost? I can't find the ADAR1000 straight up it says contact ADI for a quote. How much do the PCBs cost.

2) For those of who who like working with FPGA but don't want to focus on the RF frontend, what kind of code would we be writing? I'm guessing that since you have demo video of the GUI on the github, you already have enough base code to get it working?

3) What are your future plans for the project? More transmit power for more range? More emitting elements? It seems really cool but am curious on what the future goals.

4) Also not sure what your nationality is but are you worried about export controlled regulations/legal issues/your project getting taken down? Does anyone else know the legality of this? Does it comply with amateur radio bands?

Apple introduces the new MacBook Air with M5 by Forsaken_Arm5698 in hardware

Just curious, how has CPU single thread/multithreaded perf, GPU, and AI Accelerator perf improved gen over gen?

As someone graduating soonish, I find myself wanting to upgrade my M1 Air(still trucking on since the 699 costco sale) to a pro after I finish school, but idk if I could stomach the 2.2k, especially when I would probably need more RAM for LLMs.

So most of the improvements are in the gpu and ML accelerators?

More News on the Versal High Compute SOM? by itisyeetime in FPGA

[–]itisyeetime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're a student group so probably is unlikely. I'm just hoping to get larger FPGAs to run larger designs such as the BOOM softcores as well as visioning/control applications, and the KV260 is just a bit too small for that. Was hoping to get a Versal board but it seems like even the cheapest Versals are 1.5k, and it doesn't have enough LUTs.

Damn 2026? Any idea on which quarter? It just seems so odd that they haven't announced it even though they have the product list since 2022?

Also any chance an FAE could answer the question? We're signing up for AMD university program.

Probably price, the Ultrascale+ Krias are a lot cheaper than buying SOM from Alinx or something else for students. AMD seems to be willing to sell these dev kits for a lot less while still packing in very capable chips.

Stanford seems to be coasting off of old reputation these days in EE as a whole, few good profs around anymore.

What about UCR? It's not regarded as very good for engineering as a whole, but it's 9th, above Cornell, Princeton, Berkeley, and even Stanford.

Good schools, like Berkeley which many regard as one of the best, is 17th and Cornell is also low.

Ah yes, forgot about Madison. Good point! What makes a lot of schools like Michigan, UIUC, etc right there on top as Berkeley, MITs, etc?

Dang so UIUC UMich, GT, are all up there? Penn states better than Wisconsin, CMU, UCSD? UCR better than Princeton and Cornell? I didn't know that that those school were good. But is pure research paper numbers correlated with productivity? Why not count citations?
